Covering wallpaper with paint

We recently bought our marital home back after 21 years and it still had the beautiful Waverly wallpaper from 1985 on huge front entry split entrance wall. Colors Navy Blue background and Pink Tulips, Green Leaves. Father in law says "you have to keep it" but my colors are now different (wine and spinach). I like the floral pattern, just not the color. I apparently did a fantastic job installing the paper in 1985, it's still up and looks good. I even covered the outlet covers with the paper! Remember when we did that in the 80's?
Is there a product that I can use to lightly roll on or spray cover the wallpaper that leaves the PATTERN to show through but Dims the Navy Blue and Pink Tulip colors? Like a clear spray opaque to dim the brightness. Lighter pink tulips would match the wine color in furniture and curtains. Lightening up the navy blue would match spinach color in furniture/drapes. Obviously cover the entire wallpaper with a coat of something, just do not know what to try. Please help with ideas if you could! Thanks!

I agree! Depends on the wallpaper. age, and how good it lays on the wall. Most newer wallpaper is like a vinyl over paper backing and moisture can affect it. I have painted wallpaper and had good results. Only to find it was hard to remove since the paint also sealed it. As with any new/different process you may want to try a small inconspicuous area before tackling the all the wallpaper. You can also email the author of the website about your concerns.

I agree with John. When I was younger, I painted over wallpaper and it showed every flaw on the wallpaper. Strip off the wallpaper (I hate that part) and paint it a very fresh color. You will be happy you did it right!

Then I would hang fabric over it.
