I have this huge round mirror that is 4' round. It needs to match my now redone dining room. Please need help deciding how or what to use to transform it. Thank you.
The painting surrounding the mirror is of aged looking fruit. Need it to be brighter,

Since your look is more nautical looking, I would paint the frame a beachy aqua, or with an aqua or turquoise base, and then drybrush with an off-white top coat. Another option would be to put circles around the frame, and gived it an aged brass look, to make it look like a ship's port hole. Have you cleaned it first?

What style is your dining room? What are the colors you are currently using?

It is gorgeous mirror! Yes it just needs some complementary color on the frame to blend in with your lovely light color scheme in the room....soft aqua or turquoise as the other suggests then dry brush some white on top but do not cover the turquoise completely so it looks antiqued when it is done...will be stunning!

I don't see a beachy theme.... what style is your room, It appears to me a white distressed finish would work, or for a more formal look, a gold leafing. for a pop of color you could paint a vivid, or intense tone of one of the colors in the room to give it punch

Liz, have you thought of leafing the inside part of the frame. "Gold"leaf comes in many colors and also multicolor. You can either keep the outside rim as is or paint it and leaf the inside part. Leafing is an easy process. You most likely can Google the process. Any craft store will have the supplies. I was also thinking if you didn't want to keep the frame you could most likely remove it and just use the mirror part and use the frame for something else. Good luck.

I've painted many mirror frames. PUT a strip of painters tape on the glass as tight to the frame as possible. Spray with a complimentary paint colour. Use a brush or sponge to apply another colour paint or wood stain to add highlights, perhaps just along the edge. Consider off white main colour with grey, beige or even black highlights.

Because I teach oil painting, I would suggest just brightening the colors just a little with oils. I love the fruit motif. It looks very colonial. It is a beautiful mirror. A picture of the current dining furniture would help a lot but I am taking your question with the only photo. If you take some Orange Glo which is pure Valencia orange oil and go over the frame, you may be surprised at the result and may not want to do anything else. Sorry if I could not help more. Best of luck. : )

I took the advice of using the gold leaf around the inside rim, it looks wonderful. Will send a picture soon.

Gather all sorts of small branches, trim in different sizes and glue to the frame. If you want something more elegant, spray paint them gold or silver, add a few crystals if you want a bit of sparkle. The other thing, if you'd like faster results, there is a great spray paint that does a hammered metallic finish - pewter, silver and perhaps gold.

Looks like you have grey walls. Great! You may want to paint a base color, such as a darker grey, or black, and purchase pewter or silver rub n buff to rub on the higher areas . It will look more contemporary and really stand out as a beautiful focal point! Keep the rub n buff on only the high areas, and the darker color will give the mirror great dimension.

Totally agree with Mary. Or you can use gray chaulk paint and then glaze.

Paint the edges the gray of the wall?

Use a metallic silver or pewter paint. Metallic is neutral but would enhance that frame so it is no longer country but traditional like your wainscot and wall color. I have painted mirror frames and lamps even after purchasing them new just to make them work in a room!

I like this idea. I think painting the trim around the painted fruit might actually brighten up the fruit. I wonder if you could use mirror paint? But I agree that metallic or pewter would be pretty.

You might want to go to a DIY picture frame shop for guidance in changing out the frame for something brighter. Folks did this all the time in the frame shop my wife used to work at...

LEAVE IT TOTALLY ALONE! It's unique, you mess with it and it'll destroy it's collectable/antique? value! Let it stand as an "accent" piece. If anyone says otherwise-- tell them they don't know what they're talking about!!! It is GORGEOUS-- I wish I had it!!! ENJOY!

How about putting mosaic mirror or glass on it

Excellent idea as someone stated with a low tone metallic like pewter, brushed nickel and if you want the fruit to stand out, you could outline them with something darker, like a paint pen. Or just use 2 colours on the frame. I say all this only because I'm obsessed with balance in colours! Good luck. It's a beautiful piece!

turn it into a sunburst! add lots of flat wooden painter stirers around it and paint those silver or black with silver tips, whatever you like.. Or you could put bright metal twine over the sticks or ribbon even if you wanna challenge yourself to use up what you have without getting more paint,

I like the idea of painting it a metallic finish.

I would paint it with a metallic finish, adding some bling. Do you have a collection of seashells? Perhaps glue shells in a decorative fashion on the bottom right side of the frame. Or, go crazy and cover the entire frame.
