Kitchen Back Splash

My husband and I want to add a backslash to our kitchen. There are two major problems: 1. What colors would tie in everything in our kitchen, and 2. where do we end the back splash? Our cabinet make an l shape on the lower cabinets, but our uppers do not stop in the same place so we have a huge open space. Please help, any suggestions are welcome.

Your kitchen colors are red, white, blue and black? A patriotic red-white-blue backsplash would work to tie in the kitchen colors. An all-white or off-white backsplash would work well as a neutral, to avoid looking too busy. If you draw a straight line from the bottom of your upper cabinet at the wall down to end of the countertop at the wall, that will mark the endpoint of your backsplash. Any other way and it looks choppy like stairsteps.

You can't go wrong with white subway tiles! They have been stylish since they first came out to today! As for where to end the tile, end it at the bottom of the cabinets, putting up a strip of molding painted white to mark the boundary.

Paint changes in kitchens, I paint mine house every two years! When we tiled our back splash in our kitchen I picked a neutral earthy color that any color would go with for me I picked travertine tile in off whites, and light browns because I paint my kitchen every two years. I would paint every year but my husband glare at me. At that time my kitchen was a milky yellow. Last week I painted it a light gray and it matched perfectly. The grout was also a light brown so it was also a neutral or earthy color.

If you are leaving all the elements in your kitchen the same (red wall color, checked wallpaper, wallpaper border etc.), I would suggest avoiding any tile with multiple colors, patterns or even texture since you already have a lot going on in there. Like @Deb S, I feel like a solid white or off-white backsplash would work the best with your current decor. Now, if you are planning to remove the wallpaper and change paint colors, either now or in the near future, then the sky is the limit for backsplash choices. Regarding where to stop the tile... I think if this was my kitchen, I would use the countertop as a guide for how far out the backsplash should run, based on the photos you have provided. (See photo)

In looking at your border ( of which I LOVE ) go with tin..I say this taking in the flour sifter and othe metal objects in the border..Not to mention very easy to clean.. :)
  • You have a small backsplash already and you may want to use that as your guide. You could use beadboard painted with semigloss or the good mold resistant paint in white to match your cabinets and to brighten up the area. 4x8ft Beadboard is about $20 at Home Depot and would look good with the things going on. You could also use glass tiles in a neutral color like whites and stone colors. You can use small decorative pieces of trim (as suggested already) to outline the backsplash to make a "box" so that everything works together and it does not look like an afterthought.

I would opt for mosaic glass tiles. They are on a mesh backing so they can easily be cut to fit into odd areas so that they would be even across the top and go down into the recessed portion of the back splash. A lighter tile would brighten up the kitchen a lot. Perhaps a stainless steel look would work also.

The white subway tiles are a great idea. As you already have a lot going on in your kitchen you may want to look at tiles that have a matte finish rather than glossy. It's a very classy tile that won't interfere with any future changes you may decide to make (like changing out the paint colour or wallpaper)

I have the same problem with the end of the backsplash...nothing looks right.... a solution for yours would be a add 2-3 narrow simple wood open shelves by the end of your cabinets..... bringing them to the edge of you current counter...painting them the same as yor cabinets and finishing with a bit of simple moulding. Bring the backsplash to that edge. I'd stick with something very old world feel and simple solid color, subway tiles or barn board wood would be great look with your vintage things. Depending on the area. I'd go with tiles if its close to the stove or sink where water or cooking grease might hit it.

I recently did my back splash using white poly ceiling tile that comes in sheets from Menard's. After cutting it to size I painted it the color I wanted and then used a glaze with a touch of stain to give it some depth. It was inexpensive and looks great!

Hope you can visualize. I'm just not used to having a back splash but when I redid the kitchen I took some beautiful cork back placemats with gorgeous still life floral prints and attached them to the wall between cabinets and counters. Striking and if I get tired of the look I can change them. The mats were a gift and I I had them in my hutch cabinet when the light went off in my mind to use them as I did. Possibility
