I need some ideas on how to make this unit taller.

It's a child size cubby unit that I purchased from a church that had been sold. I'm refinishing it (still not done painting it as you can see) for my mud room. When it's all said and done I would like for it to be almost like a wall unit if that makes sense.... Currently it stands 47" tall I would like for it to be somewhere between 65-70" tall. My husband and I have gone back and forth between weather we should build onto the top or to the bottom. Thank you in advance for any ideas you may have.

Hi Kacie! I would build onto the top of the unit. Basically you'll want the largest solid unit on the bottom. So since this is 47" and you want to add another 20" on top, having the largest on bottom will ensure it will be stable so you can use it properly and load it up with stuff.

Or you could have a base cabinet built and attach this to the top. The bottom cabinet could be deeper to provide seating and could have storage underneath with or without doors. Then I'd apply crown molding to the top to give it a finished, built-in look.

This would look a little strange to have this cubby unit on bottom and a cabinet on top. Since this is peg board and is not going to be "fine" furniture, I would look for an unfinished solid 24" tall cabinet (can be a little wider and deeper) to use as a base. I would use the unit pictured above as the top and make sure it is secured to your wall! Or if you are handy, build bookshelves on the bottom...still secure this piece to the wall!

Looks to me that it is now sitting left-side down with the bottom to the right, notice the molding on the right. -- I'd look at sitting it rotated 90 deg clockwise and put a "galley rail" onto the top.

I think to make it look built in or like a real piece of furniture I would take the pegboard off the back and replace it with white paneling or some kind of backer board. I'd also consider flipping it totally upside down too. The baseboard becomes crown molding at the top and makes it a little less recognizable as a cubby for kids. I agree with Jeanette's idea about unfinished cabinetry on the bottom too.

I like Janet Smith's idea only I would remove that peg board and put white bead board on the back. Good Luck!

I don't know if I read it wrong or what! And I agree about the bead board backing...or just plain lumber and it would look fantastic.
