I have a confession to make. I'm frugal. I like to use that word instead of cheap. When it comes down to it, I'm always looking for ways to update items using quality items into something useful again, and spend as little $$ doing it as possible. That's why this old cabinet door was a great option for using what I have on hand to make something decorative and useful for the holidays.
I wanted it to be a deep red color to go with my other Christmas decor, so I did a base coat of General Finishes Chocolate 1st so when I distressed it, it would also match my home decor better.
The red paint I had on hand was a bright red, and the dark brown paint underneath made it a darker red, and allowed me to lightly distress the edges to coordinate with my home decor. This was just a personal preference in design.
this red paint dried darker than shown here.
I had this old stencil from about 20 yrs ago I pulled out and gave it a candy cane stripe around the edge.
Cutting Edge Stencils are my favorite stencils. They have a great variety, and the quality makes it easy for even an amateur like myself to use. The snowflake stencil was a perfect choice for this simple Christmas tray.

After painting the stencil, I lightly distressed the tray and stencil and completed finish with Polyvine Top Coat.
I already had these great drawer pulls from a high-end dresser I'd painted and replaced the knobs to update. These were such great quality, I wanted to find another use for them. Dry brushed the same white paint and sealed them to match.
Drilled holes in each side of the cabinet drawers and attached the old drawer pulls as handles for the tray.
All ready to serve my guests a cup of hot chocolate and Christmas cookies when they drop by during the holiday season.

Happy Holidays to you all!!
