Does anyone know what this bug is?

Hundreds of these bugs have appeared in my yard. My Elephant Ears are covered with them. They suck the life right out of the plants. I have Sevin dusted and sprayed and they are still there. They have migrated to my tomatoes and roses.
These things are killing my plants.

Try garlic and water in spray bottle. I don't know what the bugs are, sorry, but lots of bugs don't like garlic
  • For right now until they are identified for you, I would make up some soapy water and give everything a good dousing. Most bugs such as Japanese Beetles will die in good old fashioned soapy water. Ivory is good but use anything to make it sudsy. Then rinse the plants and repeat if necessary if they reappear.

    • @Victoria Just remember soaps can cause harm to plants so if you spray the plants (Ivory is not as harsh), be sure to give them a shower before the sun beats down on them. You need an insecticidal soap which can take care of many pests and is safer for you, your pets, and nature.

Could be an Aphid....I cld be wrong. I was infested with them this year. My grapes, apples, roses. They suck the sap from the leaves, apples and petals. I tried spraying with water and dusting, but nothing helped.

They are stink bugs and just pray they don'e get INTO your house. One year we had them living in our attic over the garage. We took the cars out and set off a bug bomb. Then we literally swpt up THOUSANDS of dead ones. They are horrible.

@Pinky S, we get them in our attic too, this time of year, along with box elder bugs (we have a box elder tree on our river property across the road). I hate going to the little-used attic to get luggage or Christmas decor out, and find them in the dormer windows! If I had thousands of them, I'd want to MOVE, lol! In all seriousness, though, what brand bug bomb did you use, just in case it ever gets to that? That's good info to know and have! My sister and I have this same conversation this time of year, as we go to decorate. We also get the occasional flies that seem to want to find a winter home too. Totally gross, all of them.

They are stink beetles. I smash one you'll know why they are called that. Call a nursery and they can tell you what to use to get rid of your little stinkers.

Yes, it is a Stink Bug. We got a warning about them here in CA. Our agricuture is being threatened with them. According to Our literature, there is not much you Can do about them except pick them off one by one. What a bummer

We had some when I was growing up...flicked them into a metal coffee can with a bit of gas in it (along with the potato bugs), then the adults lit it. Maybe not the best way, but it worked, and got all us kids to help with the bug infestations!

My backyard in infested with them for the first time EVER. They are killing my squash plants and elephant ears. Going to try the soapy water treatment. I wonder why we got them for the first time this year after having a garden in our yard for many years. Good luck!

  • Bobbie Bobbie on Aug 24, 2016
I lived in Lyman at that time and they showed up at our house too . You couldn't hardly sit on the deck for that smell. They got in the house I guess to winter and when one would come out, I could smell him in the room and the hunt was on. Never did find anything to do away with them. Sold our home in May. Moved 2 hours south east and so far haven't had the problem here.

Also called Japanese Beetles which were thick this year....they eat plants. I am sure there is a difference but look the same as a stink bug to me.
