I love using ordinary things to turn into decorations, and when it comes to winter, I like to decorate for the entire season, that way I am not trying to take down Christmas oriented decorations in the sub zero temps we experience here in January. So this is a perfect decoration that will carry me thru to spring.

Materials

I was inspired by a pair of red mittens that had seen better days, so it was off to rummage thru odds and ends of left overs from previous projects. I gathered 6 pine boughs and 1 bunch of red berries. These can be bought at Dollarama for $7.00.

Gather Your Materials

  • a pair of mittens
  • pine boughs
  • red berries
  • floor wax
  • aluminum pan
  • foam blocks
  • rice
  • plastic bags
  • wire

Floor Wax Mittens

I took the mittens and floor wax and an aluminum container.

I stuffed them with plastic bags then placed over heating vent to dry.

DIY Mittens

Once dry, remove the bags and they should look like this.

Cut Foam in Half
Cut Foam in Half

I took one of these foam blocks and cut it in half.

Next I filled two sandwich bags with rice and added some water to it. The purpose for this is to use as a weight for the bottom of the mitts. Place bags in bottom of mittens.

Tape Wire to Foam Blocks

Next I took the two pieces of foam and my wire. You want your wire about two feet long. Stick one end into the bottom of the foam and bring it up around to the top. Secure with tape. Take the other foam and do the same with the other end of wire. You are going to put this inside the mitten on top of the bag of rice. You may have to cut the foam to fit. Take 3 of the boughs and stick them inside the foam in the mitten add a few branches of the berries. Sorry I don't have a picture of this step. Repeat with other mitten.

Once you have the boughs in the mittens, take a small piece of wire attach it to one of the boughs then wrap it around the wire used attached to the foam. This is for support.

Here is what it should look like finished.

You can also use Elene's Fabric Stiffener, or a solution of sugar water to stiffen the mittens.

Sorry Mare for the misspelling of your name. My tablet has a mind of its own and puts in what it thinks a name should be!

Thanks Mark for the tips! I haven't heard of that type of fabric stiffener so I don't know if it is available in Canada.
