Burnt marks on stainless steel cooktop

I was canning for the first time this summer and the canning pot was larger than my electric burner on my stainless steel cooktop. It made a circle of brown on the cooktop and the inside dish. I have tried many things and can't get it clean. Any suggestions

You might be able to use very fine steel wool and work the burned area in the same direction as the existing surface. Then finish off with wet-dry sandpaper.

We have run onto this problem often. The burn mark could be due to oil or any other chemical left on the surface. We generally are able to get the stain to be gone completely by using oven cleaner (fume less). Make sure you wear a protective mask and not inhale any part of it. The steel wool method had left marks. It will be many years before that will wear out. Hope this helps.....

Steel wool will scratch. Southeast Solar has the right answer oven cleaner. Do a spot check and first and if it works leave it in for about 2 hours use a greenie to clean it off with and rinse it. Keep applying until it's gone.
