I'd take down the wood. Maybe put just a valance if you want the top of the window covered. Then you could add a shelf above the curtains.

You're talking about the wood valance over the window, right? I'd get rid of that -yesterday! You might be able to re-use the wood to make a pretty shelf above the window, with the sides of it hanging low enough to drill a hole on each end to hang a decorative/coordinating curtain rod through. You could use the shelf to display things that represent the personality of the person/people who use the room, and/or to tie the accessories etc. together.

I'm actually talking about the wood above. It opens up to a late vaulted ceiling and storage space.

It took a 30' foot ladder plus an extension arm to change out the light bulb. Haven't figure that out yet.

I agree. Take the wood out and use it to make some shelving.

I would take the wood off the window and the wood slates on the ceiling I would paint white and leave
  • Lorraine Lorraine on Nov 14, 2016

Makes me laugh! Not in a bad way... Sounds like an attic area!🤔Bonus-- the Christmas ornaments could be stored there!!!! PS -- I'm 5' tall dragging a ladder would cause more damage than a Reno!!!

I've seen some great storage created with wood crates from Michael's. Stain them the same color as the wall or paint them for a nice contrast, then screw then together going across the top of the window!

Crate book shelves around the door and use a rolling library ladder to access whatever you put up there. Sheers on the window, you could paint walls white before you add the shelving

I had wooden valence in a place once that I used to put my baskets on, u have anything u need to display?
  • MK McDonald MK McDonald on Nov 16, 2016
Anything that brightens a home and adds natural light is worth the trouble of a Reno. Do you even need a curtain? So many people think every window needs to be covered. If no one can see you naked or having sex ..lol..let the sun shine in! Cheers!

I know getting up there is hard and I don't know how u do, you must have a very tall ladder.Ecamillayn ada is there anyway to remove the wood without ruining it? If you can I would remove the panel and then put bating and then put a pretty material over it staple together and put it back up.It would eliminate looking at all the wood.
  • Lorraine Lorraine on Nov 16, 2016
And you would still have all the storage there.Putting Christmas decorations or somethings u normally wouldn't use to often in there.

So, you have a vaulted ceiling above the wood plank ceiling? You are wanting to know how to access that space or if you should remove the wood plank ceiling? I would remove the wood plank ceiling and expose the vaulted ceiling. To access the area above that you would have to create an opening to it and that might not be very attractive unless you would remove part of the ceiling and create a loft space.

Your welcome. I am sure that whatever you decide will be beautiful.
  • Kristin Kristin on Nov 17, 2016
expose the vaulted ceiling, unless you are somewhere that needs to be concerned with heat loss
  • Veronica Leidy Veronica Leidy on Nov 17, 2016
Just remove the curtain and hang some stained glass. Leave the natural wood alone

Add a fixed glass above the sliding glass door...let's light in, but no one can see in and will really brighten the room.

Remember if you're in the mountains he tries I'm quite sure that that ceiling was put there because of the cold. Some have used theirs is a loft or have just opened it with a pull-down ladder that can be closed and just as storage the beans have to stay of course because it does hold your house together quite sure they're not just looks.

I don't understand what the cold has to do with it as cold air sinks, which would make the place seem colder than it really is. Good for summer, but not the winter!

I would definitely remove the wood and have the space above the curtains be an extension of the lower windows but leave uncovered to take advantage of the sun.

Well what would you put up there? If you have it stored now and it's not a problem why do you need to use that area that you will heat and cool at a huge amount into your budget. The wood looks beautiful does the vaulted ceiling have wood as well? If it's just plain leave this one up. You have to decide what you need to store up there and if it's worth it. What it would accomplish, is there a window that's in hiding, does it have a more beautiful ceiling? Just ask yourself why you want it down, I have a filling you just want the room to feel larger and the house to look grand and that's ok, it's your house. Enjoy your house anyway you like to.

I love the wood, if you must have bookshelves, put a narrow one on both sides of the patio door- put a rod pocket curtain between them in something sheer to let light through. The chalky blue is wrong for a rustic room. Use a neutral color.
  • Juli Santa Cruz Juli Santa Cruz on Nov 19, 2016
Because if you're in there and your heating it and it's cold your heat rises so if you take out the ceiling here he's going up to no man's land and you're sitting on the floor freezing that's why. You understand the minute you remove your ceiling.

You can paint upon that wood or else do designs with decoration materials

The space you are talking about is above the window or is there a loft on the other side your talking about ? I think keep loft . Make for reading arts crafts . make box steps to grt to it and have storage in the steps !

  • Larry Larry on Apr 21, 2017

I would get blue curtains to match the side wall or at least add accessory to the curtain with color. Possibly paint cross beams to the loft blue also to tie a theme together of blue and natural wood.

This "floor" on top of your ceiling looks more like an afterthought to acquire more (but useless) storage space. Time to purge anything you haven't used in over a year. Remove the wood and paint the room (including the window wall) a light color. I would leave the beams as is and decide later if you want to paint them. If you decide to paint the beams, think a light distressed look.
