How To Clean Upholstery?

One of the worst things that can happen after spilling wine on your carpet, is doing so on your upholstery. Sometimes even carpets and rugs are easier to clean, because if you are lucky they can be taken out in the backyard and shampooed. However sofas are a bit more tricky and awkward to move around. In addition not all types can be stripped from the fabric and washed in the washing machine. Here are a few ideas how to clean upholstery without making things worse:
1. Act immediately. When it comes to stains, the most important thing is to act as soon as you spot it.
2. More detergent doesn't mean you will get rid of the stain. Instead try to leave the detergent for longer. Dry stains will take longer, you just need to be patient.
3. Read carefully the washing instructions attached to the fabric. If they are still there and not faded, you might just get information on what kind of detergent to use and at what temperature. Follow these instructions carefully - they are there for a reason.
4. If you have a colourful sofa, add a cup of vinegar to your cleaning solution. It will prevent the colours from running.
5. When you clean the stain try not to rub - it will damage the fabric and the colours will fade. You will no longer have ketchup on it, but you will be left with a faded spot.
6. If you are making your own cleaning solution as instructed by a fellow Hometalk-er, make sure you test it on a less visible spot. Try the back of the sofa for instance. Better safe than sorry, right?
