If the paper is secure on the wall and you don't care if it looks exactly perfect I'd say go for it ! Older houses have imperfections but those imperfections are memories of your childhood. Years ago many people papered over or painted their wallpaper because the paper was secure and very hard to remove. Dark blue wallpaper will require primer, preferably in tinted to match the final color you will put on the wall. I would do 2 coats of the primer to get good coverage if your final color is light. My sister in law lives in an older home and her wide baseboards are painted the same color as the walls which is a pale yellow. If you go for a medium to darker color, paint the baseboards a couple shades lighter or white or cream. Good Luck and take pictures
  • You can paint and as Mary I stated you will have to make sure wallpaper is secure. You have 2 choices~paint over the wallpaper with a good primer (I use Zinsser) and do light coats because too much moisture can cause the wallpaper to peel. The 2nd choice is to use light joint compound in a 5 gallon bucket (less than $20) and coat the walls and texture them with the joint compound. May take you a couple of buckets but it will seal the walls and then you can just buy a cheap drywall primer and paint (Valspar 2000 is a very good inexpensive paint) or look on their mistint ends to find beautiful colors to paint (Lowes and Home Depot do this). I would recommend taupe, tan, gray, beige, colors (like Dust Bunny, Oatlands Subtle Taupe, Woodrow Wilson Putty all Lowe's Valspar colors). I buy mistinted paints and actually have gotten so lucky with paint for $5-7 a gallon versus $35! Bedrooms are to be relaxing so do not go with reds, yellow, or orange because they can excite your senses instead of relax. Gray, neutrals, blues, even greens are great. Brown is good too. I would paint the trim semi gloss white (which you may find semi gloss in bright shades of white on the mistint aisle or area too). This will brighten up your room tremendously. I also have another idea which will cut down on using a bucket of drywall mud~go to the area where the damaged beadboard or paneling is and do some wainscotting. I can show you pics of what I did, if you wish. You have options. I say for about $100 you can totally overhaul this room. I have done this many times! Good luck

@The Garden Frog with C Renee me too ! I used joint compound to texturize my powder room. There was nothing wrong with the walls but wanted a sandstone looking texture for my animal print themed room and it turned out great.

i would go with the joint compound only because your sheet rock is bad and it will get worse i think with the moisture from painting over paper apply it with a soft touch so you don't loosen any more sheetrock i think you will be happier with the results...a childhood home is to be loved and i think you love this one good luck i will follow you because i am excited to see what you do xx
  • Lots of good advice here..... the only thing I would add is if you are taking a very dark wall to a light color, it may take more than two coats. (The last wall I did exactly like this took three coats of primer (Zinzzer) and two coats of paint - primer was tinted to close to the color of paint) One tip, I would not tint the primer the EXACT color of the paint final color... a shade or two off allows you to see your final coats and insure you haven't missed any spots.
