Redoing 1950's School Desk

I found a great 1950's school desk this weekend. It's not in as good condition as the one in the picture, but it's close. I am going to have to do a little clean up of course and paint the metal base due to some minor rust and a few scratches. Any other ideas/suggestions as to how I could make this desk look even greater? Appreciate any input.

I refinished four of these desks a while back. In addition to sanding and painting, I sanded the wood parts and polyurethaned them.

Thanks Julie. I think that's what I'm going to do. That was my original idea but then a friend suggested I try to use "new colors" and paint it. I nixed that idea because I want it to look as original as possible. Did you use a satin poly or high gloss? thanks again

I have a small re-sale store in Kansas and run across old school desh every once in a while. I recently had one just like yours and did a lillte clean up, then decidwd to spray paint the metal parts barn yard red, and the desh top blackboard. Turned out real cute, the lady I bought it from came in and didn;t reconize it as hers and fell in love with it. I have painted others in bright school colors and they sell quite well for childrens work centers. Good luck with your project!

I was lucky enough to come across one just like this, I decided to paint the wood parts a taupe color, the bolts that attach the wood I am going to do a silver on & I am still "on the fence" about what color to do the metal in.
