I would suggest perhaps having the counter tops re-laminated to a new pattern and changing out the knobs/handles for a different style. that alone should make the place look a bit different for relatively little cost.
In addition to what Dan said, you can paint the walls. You can install a different full backsplash. You can install new flooring. You can paint the cabinets, or have them painted. If you have the money, you can reface the cabinets.
I just did this project..updated my kitchen..I took down the doors, sanded and primed and painted them an uplifting and fresh SAGE color. I bidded on EBAY for 50 new antique cabinet handles then spray painted them metallic (faux stainless steel) for an added update I spray painted the hinges to..it really made a vast difference. I can see that you are a clutterbug like me, no disrespect, you need a "find -a-place for everything" day, then you can get to work without knocking into stuff.
These don't answer my question because my kitchen floor is higher than the rest of my floors with several layers of manolium, my bottom cabnets have cut outs inside of them and the outer frame can just pull off, so in other words, I need replacements of them all. I'm so poor that I can only afford the best because I can only buy it once.
