How about, black lacquer round the base & legs, and add mirror cut to size to the top . Use e600 glue to stick it down. Ask for bevel edges of mirror. If mirror too expensive, keep the beautiful wood grain but lacquer coat it and pop a lovely piece of glass over it. Basically, keep the room bright when working with dark leather couch. Hope this helps you .

Get tiles, small ones or like you would use as a back splash, grout, then seal. Or get stencils, or make copy of pictures of tg e real thing put them on their and get a piece of round glass, this way you can change the pictures if you want to, or postcards, old newspapers, if you find want it to be perment cut them out, place them were you want them and put the glass on top of them.

    How about a clock stencil?

I actually think these colors work together. I'd clean it up, protect it with tung oil, etc. Add accents to the room (pillows, area rug) that have the black and rust tones.

I used the directions from the Internet to paint my coffee table top a faux marble. Looks great!

The burled edging on the table top is striking. If you are good with masking tape, try covering it, and paintingall of the rest of the table black, Add a new knob (I'd go for glass) and there you go. The contrast between the black and tan should look amazing.

Either sand it down and stain it darker or use Annie Sloan chalk paint. Depending on your style, you could either shabby chic it or make it modern and leave it just the color you choose and seal it.

If you could find a stencil that looked like the rings of a tree and sanded the top in the inner circle and stencil the pattern, then stain the rest dark brown black. Find real bark for the edge and the drawer front, use adhesive to put it on and shellac over it to protect it and make it easy to clean. It would look rustic and trendy.

Salam Alikum, I don't believe you would need a craft store, you could make a template from a piece of paper and a picture from the Internet, paint or stain and lacquer from a hardware store, and you could try mixing saw dust with wood glue to imitate bark and paint it dark. Good luck in whatever you do!

Yes Leisa is right, you could go for an aged look to match top by sanding back the paint on edges and drawer front.Protect with a well buffed finish of wax, give the top a good polish too and pop a large cheerfully rug underneath, voila!!

Hi, Whatever you do don't paint over the top! It is so lovely. There are numerous ways described on the internet to clean the top, remove water stains, etc, and bring out the beauty of the table. No shabby chic stuff either. Look at Architectural Digest for ideas to mix furniture pieces. Good Luck!

Sand it and paint it a color that goes well with your walls. Tape the legs and move the table to the garage or an area out of the wind to avoid having dust settle on the painted surface. Allow plenty of time for each coat to dry.
  • Dawn Taylor Dawn Taylor on Nov 19, 2016
I would do a dartboard design on it But use a stain ( I'm partial to unicorn spit) so you can see the wood grain

Get some old music sheets and podge modge them to the top of the table, or old book pages. Will look neat with black sofa.

I agree with Ev- DO NOT cover that gorgeous wood on the top! It will absolutely ruin the value and beauty of it. to protect the top, you could get a piece of cut glass with beveled edges from a local glass shop to put on top. OR if it has scratches, sometimes a light sanding and rub with a Tung oil or light stain will do the trick. Or if you prefer heavy sanding and only Tung oil. Just please preserve that gorgeous wood.

Hi, Everyone, A lot of ideas. I like Dxm7's idea of protecting that beautiful wood top with cut glass , beveled edges look classy. Look at Apartment Therapy website for some more interior design ideas on a budget. If you ruin that gorgeous wood top you will regret it later. I hope that input helps. That's my 2 cents. Always, Ev P

Thank You Ev Post.. I have planned to clean the surface well and change the knob.. and may be stain the legs to a darker shade.
  • Mary Mary on Nov 20, 2016
Great ideas! The top looks to be in good condition. You may want to stain the leather a darker color, stain the legs the same color, and then stencil some great design in the middle of the leather part such as a compass rose, or other mandala type (round) stencil. You could use an understated gold, bronze or other color that is not too bright for this...great focal point for your livingroom.

Make a vinyl cover for it and forget the hassle of paint.

I glued pennies to the top of mine and then clear coated it. Looks awesome. Everyone wants it.

I discovered a product from an antique dealer, OZ polish and it is amazing! Like spraying pledge it is that easy, my DR table looks like I refinished it, a bit pricey at about $18 a can but will last for years and can be used on all sorts of surfaces.

Not sure I would do anything other than clean and wax the top. It's gorgeous in it's simplicity.
  • Kim Salmi Kim Salmi on Nov 21, 2016
To be honest I love it as is ...beautiful piece ...if you want to blend it with the black wood ...perhaps a big black wood tray that fits the top .....or a collection of smaller ones
  • Cdbq Cdbq on Nov 21, 2016
Stain the top a lighter shade, paint the base a shiny black. Lots of polyurethane on the top so you don't worry about water stains from glasses.
  • Betsy Boeve Betsy Boeve on Nov 21, 2016
I would not make the top black because that would be too much in one room. I have used shoe polish to change the wood color before. Is the top wood or leather? Either way, if it is wood, sand it down to remove the current stain and then use ox blood shoe polish color to give it the most beautiful purple/red color. Go over the new shoe polish with bees wax or clear shoe polish to keep it from rubbing off. You can use any color shoe polish. Forgot to mention to use shoe wax, not liquid.
  • Banjojane66 Banjojane66 on Nov 21, 2016
Like the previous reviewers, I think that coffee table is beautiful as is. If you still want to decorate it, I suggest making a black vinyl cover, (like a table cloth) and if you want to change it later, you still can. Good luck!!!
  • Lori Lori on Nov 21, 2016
I would polish it and find a nice area rug that has bowns and blacks in it with some pops of color and add some colorful pillows on the couch
  • Bobbie Bobbie on Nov 21, 2016
It's a beautiful piece as is. I'd just paint the legs a high gloss black!!
  • Julia Pack Julia Pack on Nov 21, 2016
Do not paint this beautiful piece of furniture. I would use a wood wax (not polish). Wax can make wood look like new. U may need a soft toothbrush to get the was out of any crevices. Maybe change the hardware or add a table runner to make it blend better in the room.
  • V Smith V Smith on Nov 21, 2016
You said you are a novice so maybe you should start with something smaller and in a more wanting condition. If you are set on painting this piece perhaps you could stencile a compass rose oe a clock face on the top.
  • Carolyn Davis Carolyn Davis on Nov 23, 2016

that is a beautiful piece , clean and wax the top, then place a large to medium size black platter or charger in the center with some thing to catch the eye.

Love the table. You could paint the legs black and have a mirror cut to fit the top. And remember, there are many colors of black and a choice of paint finishes...satin, flat, gloss, etc. When you decide what to do and finish it, maybe you could post it on Hometalk. Would love to see it. Have fun!

I would wax it and put a beautiful dollie on the top and put and old antique light on it.
