Modern Daybed Gets an Antique Look

I am in the process of redecorating my guest room/office to make additional space for working on sewing and craft projects. I needed a bed to tuck up against a wall and was in the market for an antique sleigh bed. Unfortunately I couldn’t find one to fit my frugal budget. So when I spotted this daybed for $30 I snatched it up!
The size was right and although the style wasn’t exactly what I was looking for I loved the overall look. It’s a modern piece, probably from the 1990’s. It’s made of a light wood material, and the stain was a sprayed on shiny factory finish.
I chose Annie Sloan Chalk Paint for this project (my go-to paint!) because it works so well on a variety of surfaces without the need for primer. Sometimes the super slick finishes are tricky to paint, so first I made sure it was clean and free of oily substances.
Next I lightly scuffed the entire surface with 220-grit sandpaper to add a little roughness for the paint to cling to.
My original plan was to paint the entire bed white, but I thought it was too plain.
So I added two coats of French Linen to the panels.
And here's the final project assembled and waiting for the mattress. There's a bump out in the wall, and the bed just fits between the bump out and the closet door!
I distressed the edges with 220-grit sandpaper to add more visual interest.
The distressing also accentuates the details and gives the furniture a sense of history.
I dressed the bed with a dust ruffle and white quilt that I had on hand. I’m currently looking for new bedding but haven’t quite found what I’m looking for yet. I’m also in the market for some window treatments. And while I’m at it I think the new bed calls for a new color on the walls which are currently blue. I’m thinking perhaps a soft light grey would work well on the walls with the bed. What do you think?
I’ll update my blog once I get around to tackling the other decorating projects. If you’d like to follow along then feel free to stop over at my blog and sign up to follow by email.

Were you able to find new bedding for your project? If not, may I suggest the Vintage Paris Comforter set from LTD? It would look amazing on your beautiful daybead! 😀
