How to make a staircase the main element in our house?

Can I suggest that you do a search on 'stairs' on the Hometalk site? I love some of the ideas that the Hometalk community have come up with, but your choice will ultimately depend on the mood that you hope to create. My particular favorites are the ones that have been stenciled or wall-papered, there was also a post (no longer on the site, or if it is, I have not been able to find it) where she painted each stair a different color, like a rainbow. But perhaps that option is better suited to the outdoors. The choices are endless. Please don't forget to post a picture once it is complete!

at my house we installed stacked stone (normally used around fireplaces) on one side of the staircase... makes it a feature wall.
