4 Amazing Finds in My Own Attic!

Angel Roberts
by Angel Roberts
I have lived in my house for 8 yrs now, and I have been in the attic numerous times. However, I never really explored the farthest corners of our attic. I knew that my hubby's grandparents owned the home and that the hubby never tossed anything from the attic. I came across these four pieces a couple of weeks ago and decided they were definitely worth rescuing from storage and giving them a new life! I need some ideas for a color on the cabinet, since the glass is broke I plan to replace with chicken wire. The rocker I plan to just clean her up and put a seating pillow on it. I'm open to any suggesstions..

You might get a quick professional opinion on that cabinet before painting or putting in chicken wire. The rocking chair is just perfect! Nice finds.

Thank you!! I plan on seeing what I can find out about each piece before I do anything. The wood crates are in great condition other than being a little dirty. I don't plan on using any clean products on those, I will just use a cloth to wipe off what I can.

Wow! Congratulations! What a find! Any changes you make to these items will seriously depreciate their value. That's why I applaud your decision to check them out before you do anything. I would take the rocker and crates to an appraiser or antiques dealer for valuation and suggestions. Take along a photo of the cabinet since it's too large and could be damaged trying to move. An expert may be able to identify it for you. After that, then you can decide what you want to do. We have a rocker similar to the one you have. Refinishing will do more harm than good in the long run...and painting any antique wipes out most of its value as an antique. If something is so damaged that it cannot be refurbished or repaired to its original state, then painting might be an option.

Lucky you! I actually worked for the Atlas Company when I graduated high school. I am now 65. Your boxes brought back great memories of being the youngest person at work back then, befriended by some of the nicest women I ever knew. They taught me how to be a good wife and introduced me to decorating on a shoestring. Good times.

I'm so happy that you didn't paint first and consider your choices second. The old chair probably has value that would be ruined by paint. The glass front cabinet would look better with some form of lightening. I'm not very good at seeing things and how they would look if painted. Sometimes it's gorgeous.

Great pieces!! If you decide to paint the cabinet and remove the glass; try the Atlas boxes on the bottom shelf. I have seen these used as drawers, add some decorative pulls and you have hidden storage!

The only amazing things I've found in my attic were inside-out insulation and a colony of ladybugs.
