What type of cabinets are they? Do they have a finish?

Wash them down, lightly sand to remove any gloss and roughen the surface for paint. Prime with KILZ, BIN, or Zinsser, then paint with your color. Seal with at least three coats of water based polyurethane, lightly sanding in between coats.

I used to work for lowes in the paint dept. they sell kits that can make it easier to paint or you can buy bonding primer and paint first then choose a color you want to paint the cabinets to go over. Go to the lowes site and they have how to videos

Yes you can paint your dark cabinets a lighter colour. First wash them with a good cleaner such as TSP. You might decide to remove the doors and hardware. If you do, make sure you mark them carefully including which hinges and handles fit which door to be assured your doors fit the space they came out of. If the finish is glossy, you can very lightly sand the cupboards to scuff them so your paint adheres to them. Choose a primer that will work on either enamel or alkyd paint (I used a Benjamin Moore primer but I'm sure there is other brands that will do the same thing). Have the primer tinted the same colour as the paint you are going to use. You will more than likely have to do at least two coats of paint Choose a good quality primer and paint and I'm sure you won't be disappointed

I DID!!! I hated the look of my wood cabinets so I painted them a lighter gray and then distressed them. Now I love the way they look and I get compliments on them all the time. I was going to buy chalk paint but the guy at Lowe's told me how to make my own with paint, plaster of paris and water. Then I put a clear coat over them.
