Abbigail Hunter on Nov 19, 2016Make them a better scratching post by using coragated cardboard around a piece of 4x4 post. and make it cat friendly with a little cat nip. the cats will love it and leave your sofa alone.Helpful Reply

Tanya on Nov 19, 2016First of all, please understand that cats have to scratch for health. Buy an inexpensive scratching post. When you see you using the arms of your couch, gently and calmly pick them up and show them their post. Cats are very smart and will get the idea after a few times you do this. Be sure to praise them and pet them after they do it correctly to help them understand.Helpful Reply

Darla on Nov 19, 2016You can spray the couch with a citrus fragrance. Cats do need to scratch; ours wouldn't use a scratching post, but they LOVE to scratch cardboard. You could rub catnip where you want them to scratch.Helpful Reply

Elizabeth on Nov 22, 2016Double stick tape. I bought a new sofa and my cat decided she was going to break it in. A couple of run ins with tape on her paws and she moved on.Helpful Reply
