What is the best idea for trapping rain if you can't do gutters for rain barrels?

I have been looking into this myself trying to conserve water

containers with wide openings and large enough to catch and store water. Water containers can be made from plastic, pottery and are available at most landscape or garden stores. Look for barrels with a spout and water pump attachment for easy access to your water. and some sort of lid so nothing but water gets in. ...»

If your roof is steep and angular and has valleys where water naturally runs, place containers under each of these points. Otherwise, place containers along the entire rim of roof if possible
