First things first...if it's an artificial tree make sure to 'fluff' the tips. Next step...lights. Hopefully it's pre-lit, if not start at the top and wind your way down. I like to wrap most of the branches with lights so the whole tree is brightly lit. When I decorate my trees, I start at the top with the smallest ornaments and work down, placing the largest ones on the bottom most branches. Next is the garland or ribbon if you are so inclined. This can be cascaded down the tree vertically or wound around horizontally. I personally prefer vertical for ribbon and horizontal for garland/beads. Hope this helps.

Lights: First of all, I have to mention that I hate the new LED lights because they don't glow, they just sit there. If the star over Bethlehem had been an LED, the shepherds would never have gotten to the stable. Anyway, definitely start with the lights, but I like to put my tree in a corner or in front of a window and wrap the lights from top to bottom, in a sort of wide zigzag. They're LOTS easier to remove once January 6 arrives. Then, I like tinsel because it reflects the light. Then glass or plastic balls, spaced evenly. Then the rest of the ornaments. Then be sure to anchor the tree so it doesn't fall over when you go to water it. :-) Have fun!

If the tree is artificial, definitely fluff the branches and tips first. I always do that, then let it rest for a bit to help the branches to "settle". I do the same with a real tree...let it "settle for 24 hours once I get it set up in the house. Start with the lights if you need to add those...I always add more lights to a pre-lit tree (never enough for my tastes). I then add my garland...which varies from year to year..one year it was it was a red berry garland, another a the new mesh everyone is crazy about, one year the silver or gold beads....Always start from top to bottom as I like for it wind around the tree horizontally. Once I get that placed, I add my ornaments, usually placing my larger ones towards the bottom of the tree. And finally my topper!! Have fun!

Agree with all of the above. Starting with the lights will make your life so much simpler. Trim in a matter of personal taste. I use small candy canes on some of the lower branches, as a "treat" for the grand children. Many years ago I started buying and making ornaments especially for special nieces and nephews, who got to add them to the tree. When they got married, I included those in their wedding gifts, so they would already have some Xmas memories with plenty of room to make some new ones.

I would love some advice on the use of wide wired ribbon to decorate my tree. I see the ribbon used in several way but when I try it just doesnt look the same as what I've seen in pictures. I can make big bows with the wired ribbon it's just placing it around the tree that I can't seem to make look nice.

@Marcia An easy way to use ribbon on a tree is to cut the ribbon into 2 or 3 foot pieces and just select the spot on the tree you want and then tuck each end into the tree and it eliminates the twisting and tangling as well.

I put the tree up in sections, if not pre lit, I put lights on section at a time and fluff as I do it, I use lots of lights, winding around the branches. Be sure to put decorations in towards the trunk , too. After lights I put in the ribbon, then basically layer beads and ornaments.

A trick I've learned with three cats in the house - I hang bells on the lower branches and they get so busy playing with them they forget to do other things they shouldn't. This has worked for the last four or five years now and it it is such a pleasure after some of the escapades these three have managed. I have little bells and bigger bells hanging from ribbon and loop them all around the bottom branches. Make sure your tree is animal and small child friendly. If it will break your heart if something is damaged, there are other ways to display it. I also anchor the tree to a large picture hook on the wall with twine - because, yes, they have knocked it over in the past.
