I have used both wallpaper and peel and stick tiles, without taking the backing off. Both work great. But what I liked the best and cheapest was foam board from Hobby Lobby. It cuts to shape has a coating and lasts forever. I did my shelves 4 years ago and it still looks good. Best of all it is cleanable and lightweight.
Stop by your favorite gas station and ask the manager for any extra or leftover "pump toppers". Those are the signs on top of the pumps with ads on them. They're plastic (so easily washable) and usually blank on the other side. I have tons of them I use to line drawers, cabinets, shelves, top of the fridge, etc. They cut easily with scissors and are FREE. You can use packing tape to make them longer or wider to fit your space. It's also eco-friendly. Most convenience stores/gas stations use them and will happily give them to you when they are changed. Our area stores change monthly but each store is different-just ask when they change and be sure to pick them up the next day.
That is interesting, will have to check out the pump toppers. Thank You
