Homemade Liq Laundry Detergent

I made it today. The only problem is the Fels-Naptha didnt really dissolve. I put it in really hot water then in the microwave, used a beater on it and still it was lumpy. There has to be a better way to get that stuff to dissolve. Any comments would be welcome.

I had the same problem so I just leave the Fels-Naptha out. Been using it for about a year and I think it works better than Tide. :o)

I actually use a bar of Ivory in place of the Fels-Naptha and grate it with a grater and I actually boil it on the stove to dissolve it. I have found that if I do it in the morning and stir it throughout the day as it cools down it isn't lumpy. I actually went to a different version last time I made laundry detergent - I now use 3TBS of Washing Soda, 3TBS of Borax and 3TBS of any variety of Dawn. Put 2 QTS of HOT water in a gallon jug shake it up and then fill the rest of the jug with cool water. I fill it slowly and let the bubbles go down and it takes 1Cup per load but it does a great job because of the grease fighters in the Dawn. Have to make it more frequently but the trade off is no lumps at all.

you can get flaked castile soap detergent At Walmart I think There is one called Zote or Ivory Snow works too

my First batch I made with fels-naptha and it did not dissolve completely so I switch to Castile soap. Make sure you grate it before melting it in the water.

I used the fels naptha for a couple of years, got a bad rash-don't know if it was the detergent but I stopped using it. Recently, in a free kindle book, I found a great recipe for a liquid detergent using 3 tablespoons borax, 3 tablespoons washing soda and 2 tablespoons original Dawn dish detergent (not the concentrated stuff - the original is hard to find). I actually used Palmolive the first couple of times until I found the original Dawn. But I think you could use any liquid dish detergent including liquid castile soap. I changed the directions a little. The original directions said to put these ingredients into a gallon container (I used an old laundry detergent container and taped the directions right on the outside) and add 2 cups hot water - shake until dissolved and then fill rest of container with water. Well, you guessed it - it was so sudsy - had to keep waiting and adding a little water at a time. So now I add the 2 cups of hot water to the ingredients in an appropriate size container and stir until dissolved. I fill the empty detergent container with water - keeping room on the top for the now dissolved ingredients. When I add it carefully, it doesn't suds up much and I can add a little more water carefully until container is full. Put the cap on - shake it up - and voila! Liquid laundry detergent - CHEAP AND EASY! YAY!!(And no more scrapped knuckles from grating the bar soap!)

I had the same problem with the felsnaptha and I like NancyLee's idea to leave it out and use dish detergent instead.

I gave up after the first batch because the Fels-Naptha didn't dissolve. That was a few years ago. Maybe I will try Nancy's recipe again.

Soap isn't exactly what gets your clothes clean. It is the washing power if your machine, now saying that there are some good recipes and simple idea's you can use. One is a tablespoon of dish soap. This was in AARP newsletter my Dad receives. Another is One Good Thing by Jillie. She has very good simple recipes for laundry liquid. Remember if your borrow others idea's be sure to give them credit! This is the right thing!

Try microwaving the Fels Naptha. It will get very puffy and when it cools can be crumbled with your fingers. Any large pieces left can be grated on a slaw grater.
