I have beautiful bamboo chairs that were rained on and then sat in the sun. How can I restore them? Will they be smooth if I sand them and then stain them?

Remove any surface dust and dirt with a light dusting or vacuuming. Regular upkeep will help prolong the lifespan of your bamboo chairs significantly. Sand down any any rough spots, sharp edges or stains using a fine-grit sandpaper. Rub the affected area gently and consistently until it is smooth. This step is not imperative for newer items, but if your bamboo chair has seen better days, you will need to give it a new face. Wash the bamboo so that graininess and dust is removed before coating it with a protective layer. Take a damp cloth or sponge and immerse it in a mixture of water, ammonia and basic dish soap (approximately half a gallon of water to 2 or 3 tablespoons each of ammonia and and several drops soap). Thoroughly squeeze out the sponge so that it is only damp and not wet. Wipe down the entire surface of your bamboo chairs. Place your bamboo chairs under an electric fan, or run a hairdryer over them to help the drying process. Because bamboo warps easily when wet, the furniture must be completely dry before you can apply stain and varnish. Use a gel stain to stian the bamboo. Wear rubber gloves, dip a clean lintfree cloth on the gel stain, rub it into the bamboo until the desired shade is reached. Let it completely dry. Brush on a coat of varnish to add a layer of protection to the bamboo and allow it to dry completely. The varnish will not only create a smooth, even coating on your furniture, but it will protect it from everyday usage, nicks and scratches.
