I have very cold winters and very warm summers with lots of precipitation year round. We are in South Western Ontario, surrounded by the great lakes.

Wait and plant it in Spring as soon as you can work the ground.

Since that is a very tender leaf you should not plant until after any dangers of frost in your area.

Call your local Extension Office and ask them. They will also probably be able to provide you with some helpful hints to help your plantings flourish

In Wisconsin, we usually plant the rhubarb in spring and it always comes back after winter. Good luck - I could go for some rhubarb right about now ;)

Bear in mind that rhubarb does well when mulched with organic matter. Just don't put the mulch too near the crown of the plants, so as to avoid any rot.

Spring after frosts are done. If one comes late put newspaper over the plant to protect it. After it is established it will be ok. Make certain that you do not plant in full sun. Mulch is good. I agree with MiTmite9 do not get to close to the crown. My dad used to cover ours in the winter with dried manure from our cows.

It depends where you live. In central Wis. it thrives in full sun. When I first got my plant years ago I planted it in part shade/sun, all I got was skinny little stocks not worth eating. Then I planted it in full sun all day long on the South side of the house. The stocks are nice and thick and are tender to eat (not stringy), the leaves are almost 2 ft. across. I’m able to get 3 crops a year off of it. It’s been growing in the same spot now for over 10 years. By the way my yard is sand so when I first replanted it there I added some cow manure but have done nothing since that.
