I need some advice on how to refinish this desk..It is in good condition just needs some sprucing up.I was told it would have to be completely sanded.I was also told just scruffed up and primed...it is particle board

It looks like veneer over plywood, maybe. Refinishing it may be overkill. It's also quite big to sand. Take some 000 steel wool (available at Lowe's or Home Depot), and scuff it up lightly with that. Try to get the whole unit evenly scuffed. Clean it well to remove all dust and dirt, then use some neutral rejuvenating oil to finish it. Howard's Restore-a-finish is great; also Watco rejuvenating oil or Formby's . As a less labor-intensive alternative, you can just apply one of the above oils over the existing finish, after cleaning it well. They can eliminate most surface scratches. Good luck, and please post pics when you're done!

Martha, homemade chalk paint should cover with no prepping needed. I mix my latex paint with plaster of paris and water and it adheres without any problem. Lightly sand between coats and wipe down with baby wipe prior to next coat. Finish with a good coat of wax and buff off (I always put on two coats). Just try something, if you don't like it, try something else! Good luck

I don't know if this is Anne's recipe or not but I use 1/2 cup of hot tap water with 1/2 cup plaster of paris first.......mix really well.......then add it to 1-1/2 cups of latex paint. I have used the satin paint but some people like it duller and use flat paint. I would still sand it a little.....just rough it up so the paint has something to stick to. Hope this helps.

I'd lightly sand this to scuff it up and then use a good quality latex paint. Waxing this after chalk paint is a big chore. The sanding will take you 1/2 the time and after the latex, your done!
