Teaching Myself How to Style a Mantel

by Megan Aubrey
Styling in general has never come easy to me. It is something that I have worked hard at to get better at. After having a mantel with just a couple of items just thrown on it, I decided to challenge myself to put together, cohesive look. I think I did! I picked gold to bring the mantel collection together and have a reoccurring theme of round items. s

Great job! I bet you did not realize that you grasped one of the basic concepts of decorating...that is use odd numbers in grouping objects! I love your choice of items and my only comment would be to not place them in rows but stagger them, i.e., bring one toward the front...the shortest candle in the center slightly out front of the others. The same for the small globe on the left and the woven globe on the right. You have a great eye for picking objects. Love your color scheme!

@Jeanette S Thanks so much for your suggestions! Actually, the plant and two candles on the left are staggered - you just can't tell in the picture. I will definitely try staggering on the right - good idea!

I agree with Jeanette. Move the tallest candle to the middle and have it a bit farther back than the other two. Now they look like little soldiers standing at attention. The red walls are good looking with the white trim...
