Since my hubby and I are a upper middle age couple, we decided to move the laundry area upstairs. Plus we needed more storage, plus we needed a powder room, and of course, I needed my wine bar. We sectioned off an 11'x24' portion of the garage and custom designed and constructed ourselves a Pantry/Laundry room/Wine Bar/Powder room. More Photo's and description on:

Hanging the joists - the window was twice as large. We removed the old single pane window, and hung a new smaller window - found in the clearance section of Lowe's $40.
View from the opposite end, at the Laundry area, looking back towards the pantry cabinets on the left, coat closet on the right, further back, the wine bar and doorway to the dining room. The powder room and broom closet are behind the coat closet.
From the dining room into the new area. Wine bar on the right, the powder room and broom closet are to the left. We now have Ikea wine racks and wire shelving above the wine bar area.
View from the door into the garage towards the laundry area, new ss fridge & freezer. The Maytag red washer & dryer are now stacked and next to the sink on the left of the window. See the wood inlay that Lou designed and put into the ceramic tile floor.
Finished powder room - towel, soap and washcloth storage above the toilet. Baskets, bars and buckets from IKEA.
Finished powder room - Pocket door to save space. To the right of the door is my Broom Closet, with bracket to hang brooms, mops, etc, and shelves to hold cleaning items. Paint is a medium gray, purchased at Lowe's.

The trick for DIY'ers is to plan ahead. We had purchased much of the material 5 years ahead of time, one piece at a time, little by little. That way, it's not a huge hit to your wallet, and you're not taking out a home equity loan. All of this was done, out of pocket, no loan companies involved. We shop for deals. Scratch & dent, clearance sales, etc. I saved up for 2 years to purchase the cabinets from Ikea. I paid cash. Again, shop smart, and plan ahead. Be flexible, because unexpected set backs can occur. We were 2 cabinets short. By the time we were ready to build, the Ikea red cabinets were no longer available. So, we got the black glass fronts for the wine bar area, which worked out better, so that I can show off my glassware, and it's not a huge overwhelming expanse of red. Since my washer & dryer are red also, I purchased a stainless steel cabinet front at Ikea to break in between the red laundry cabinets and the red washer & dryer. No clash of 2 different shades of red. I'll have to take the more recent photo's, since we now have all of the shelving up in both laundry and wine bar & food prep areas. I love the extra countertop area that this addition gives us, since we do entertain quite a bit, and that extra food prep area is great for crockpots, etc.
