Rub on regular white toothpaste (NOT GEL) with a soft cloth.
Ketchup or tomato paste and vinegar actually works very well.
Brasso. I used it in the US Navy. It worked on a LOT of brass!
Also, there is this stuff called Never Dull. It is not as messy as Brasso.
We always scrub Ketchup on our brass using stainless steel scouring pad!
Buy brass cleaner at the hardware or the building supply store. Also at Walmart. It dries cloudy but military men have used it for ages. It's what I use and it's pretty easy to get a beautiful shine. Military uses it for their buttons, etc.
