Magpye on Nov 16, 2013Hello, I live in northern Calif., and I raise parrots and other breeds such as canaries, finches, budgies, etc. I can't tell you what the bird sees, but in parrots, when a bird stares directly at a person or thing, it is called "pinning." Sometimes with the larger birds, one can watch the bird's pupils contract and expand. The bird exhibiting this behavior is on alert, trying to discern whether the item catching their attention is friend or foe. On occasion, I also have helped out a number of sparrows and jays that have found themselves in an unfortunate situation. I don't know if I'm too old and blind to see it, or if this is strictly a parrot trait, but I've not noticed this behavior in the smaller sparrows, nor in any of my finches. I think the bird you saw was pinning its reflection, as previously mentioned. I hope this helps.Helpful Reply
