There is a DIY chalk paint...I have seen furniture that it was used on and fabulous.

I went to a Home Depot tonight and they don't carry it... The lady said some things are only on line... I was upset because I drove 30min. for nothing... Grrr So call your store before you waist a trip... Some stores may carry it if your in a larger city.. I may order and try it...
  • Amanda Baker Amanda Baker on Nov 16, 2013
I have not used it but have heard from some die-hard painters that it is wonderful and is very similar to Annie Sloan. You can buy it online on Home Depot's website but not all stores stock it.
  • Julie Moyna Julie Moyna on Nov 16, 2013
I had asked just for kicks when I was at my HD last week and I was directed to the chalkboard paint! I had to explain the difference. I will go back in again armed with this knowledge! :) PS...I love ASCP. Splurged on Graphite and Emperors silk Friday! Don't skimp on the wax...Go to Amazon or somewhere for ASCP clear and dark wax...
  • Stacey B Stacey B on Nov 17, 2013
I think you need to be clear when you are at HD that you want chalk paint and not chalkboard paint. There are not many reviews on this product yet-but I am eager to try it! Look at all the fabulous colors: http://www.homedepot.com/p/DecoArt-Americana-Decor-16-oz-Yesteryear-Chalky-Finish-ADC27-83/204660588?cm_mmc=shopping-_-pinterest-_-D24-_-204660588#specifications

our local Home Depot doesn't carry the Americana, but when I called they said oh we have chalk board paint. I said no, I need the furniture refinishing chalk paint..they said only online. Thanks.
  • Sherry R Sherry R on Nov 17, 2013
exactly..our store doesn't stock it. I went to Ebay and bought small sizes of Annie Sloan just to see if I like it and can do it! Once I master it, then I'll get the larger containers of the Americana and go crazy!!
  • Jeanette S Jeanette S on Nov 17, 2013
I did not know HD had chalk paint. We have a store close but on line the freight is tooo high. I wanted to order some gel varnish on ebay and it was $17 freight! We do have a AS dealer close but I just have not gone over there yet. Our weather turned in low 20s and is now wet...retirees do not have to get out in that! HA! Can do it later!

HD, let's you order it and ship it to your local store or ship it to your home with an order over $45. I will be trying it. I have used ASCP and have also made my own, so I am eager to try this one! I am ordering right now!
  • Sherrie Sherrie on Nov 17, 2013
It would be easier to find...I haven't tried it but now I am going too!

You can order on-line directly from our website. Where are you located? We have a retail location in Butler and one opening in Robinson Township. Ace Hardware in Wexford carries small 4oz containers as well.

I have never understood why anyone would pay such a high price for ASCP..It is ridiculously eay to make your own using any GOOD paint...and I have found a product called Paint Minerals... www.paintminerals.com and it is awesome. you get a perfectly smooth finish and always one coat coverage, you mix 2 TBLSP. with 2 TBL. of warm water mix that together reakky well and add to a cup of ANY KIND of good paint, the longer it sits the thicker it gets, and the paint minerals are os inexpensive,, and like I said you can use it with whatever paint you have so the colors are endless....

Well I placed a $170.00 dollars worth of HD Chalk paint... I hope I like it.!! :-) I have heard good reviews from others so I thought what the heck it is half the price of the name brands they have out there... I have so many items that I need to get going to try to get them done.. I hope to paint day and night to open up my own store after the first of the year.... I will let you know how it works.. I should receive it all sometime next week. Super excited about it..

You have bleed through on this cabinet. Walnut and dark woods are really bad for bleed through. Or it hasn't been cleaned properly. If you cleaned it then it's bleed through. Use several coats of shellac. I use a cheap sponge brushes and then thrown them away. Seal it over the paint. It seal quickly so it doesn't take long to dry. I have used up to 4 coats. The very first time I painted walnut I had this bleed through. The stockist who sold you the paint should help you trouble shoot what has happened.

  • Sherry R Sherry R on Nov 19, 2013
    awesome..all about saving money..
  • Mar M Mar M on Nov 20, 2013
I too thought that saving money was my best bet. However, when you consider that ASCP has been around over 20 years (in Europe) and has a proven record, out for the proven paint rather than the new brand. Why? First, ASCP coverage is amazing. Remember that this paint is thick and its coverage is spectacular. Then, consider that if you put a lot of effort into painting a piece of furniture, you want it to last. Again, ASCP has a proven record. I tried making my own chalk paint with plaster of paris and calcium carbonate with mixed results. I recently took a workshop with ASCP Stockist, Ida and am now convinced that a little paint goes a long way. Tip: If you've seen AS's video you can see how she spreads her paint and wax with abandon. As a beginner, my Stockist suggested I used less paint and wax rather than more. I hope that's helpful.
  • Kim Jorgenson Kim Jorgenson on Nov 20, 2013
I agree with Mar...ascp is wonderful. No odor, cleans up with water, you can paint safely inside...and has a great texture to work with. I think the price is worth the quality if you really love what your painting.
  • Sherry R Sherry R on Nov 20, 2013
very helpful thanks. I ordered a 4 oz sampling size of the AS to try. the paint and two types of wax..so I'll see. Thanks again.

I have always used my homemade chalk paint but was curious to try out.... I am disappointed and will go back to my own
  • Mary Insana Mary Insana on May 27, 2014
I recently bought and used Home Depot Americana paint and I really liked the texture and coverage. Both of my local Home Depots had it. It was at the paint counter right on the same rack as their sample size paints. They didn't have a big selection, only about 4 colors. The colors I tried were a pale green and the white.
    • Katie Mae Katie Mae on Jul 27, 2014
@Mary Insana they do have more colors they don't stock them in the store, but you can order them. I haven't tried it yet, but I love ASCP.
  • Sherrie Sherrie on May 28, 2014
I love trying new paint, but I am a raging AS fan. But saying that I have made milk paint, lime paint, and chalk paint. I love the fact that someone mentioned about their calcium carbonate for fish! I save my AS paint for furniture that is worth the cost. I understand being budget minded. And there is no reason why everyone can't afford to paint their furniture. Or experiment with it. It has given a creative, profitable outlet to many many women. I love that fact! I bought many of Anne Sloan's earlier books. She used Gesso in her paint. I have also used Gesso. It isn't exactly like her paint but it is pretty close. The downside is you need to really really clean your brushes. Paint On!
  • Katie Mae Katie Mae on Jul 27, 2014
I love ASCP, and her color palette just suits my tastes perfectly, I am not crazy about her wax at all, I have read article after article, watched videos, and am relatively skilled at redoing furniture using all different mediums, but I can't make friends with her wax, I have tried. I am anxious to try some of the knock offs to see if they even come close. I also tried making my own, hated it. I will definitely post what I find with the cheaper commercial chalk paints.

@Linda Kelly I am not an expert, but for me on hard used furniture I use Poly-acrylic. It does not yellow and wears like iron..I use at least two coats and even with outdoor things it lasts. I have used the poly on table tops and wax on the sides and legs of things. To keep the chalk paint look of matte I use matte poly.

    • Terra Gazelle Terra Gazelle on Mar 11, 2015
@Fio why would it not be? I have gotten all kinds of things from ebay and have not been disappointed.
  • Home Depot sells Americana chalk paint but only carry small 8oz. Can buy larger online. It comes out to be the same price as a quart of Annie Sloan. I have used both and can't tell the difference. Annie Sloan is great but I would have to drive far to purchase it, so I go to Home Depot for chalk paint.
  • Mary Insana Mary Insana on Aug 21, 2014
Michaels carry Americana decor chalk paint now too. The same one Home Depot carrys. They did have some additional colors that Home Depot didn't have and they also had the wax and varnish. I recently used a couple different colors and really liked them. I never used Annie Sloan so I couldn't compare it with hers. It was just as good as the others
  • Sherrie Sherrie on Aug 22, 2014
I would be willing to try it. They stock a whole lot at my store. I believe in different paint for different projects. Some works better than others but everyone of them have a place.
  • Ginger Robinson Ginger Robinson on Oct 27, 2014

When you make your own chalk paint, what brand of paint and finish do you use? Also what type of wax?

@Nahoneycutt I use the DIY paint the same as I would ASCp...i do use a deglosser if the piece is glossy to knock the gloss down and bring up the tooth of the wood. But other then cleaning, and filling any holes or dents and making sure any laminate is not loose, I just start painting. I am very satisfied with my POP chalk paint. It enables me to do projects that other wise I could not accomplish because of price.

I have used Americana Chalk paint several times and really like the ease and the coverage. It seems to stick well without priming and has great coverage with 2 coats. Michaels Crafts store also carries this paint and keeps a number of the colors in stock. Use their coupons for an even better price. I have also made diy chalk paint. I like it okay but like the Americana paint better. I still make my own for a custom color. I have used the CeCe Caldwell paint. I like the Americana bettter. But I was a beginner when I tried the CeCe Caldwell paint.

If making your own version of chalk paint with the latex paint, what type paint brush do you use because the typical AS style round brushes only come in natural bristles (china, boars, ect.) Synthetic is not available in the big round stencil style. So what do I use? Any advice. Thanks
  • Country Design Home Country Design Home on Jan 27, 2015
I've used all kinds of chalk paint, including my own. Each has its own unique qualities, but Annie Sloan and Americana are my two favorites. I buy the Americana at Michaels with coupons so the price is very reasonable. I do love their color palette as well. I especially like the wax finish from Americana. You brush it on, let it dry then buff it. It has virtually no odor and cleans up with water.

Micheal's also sells the Americana brand of chalk paint also and you can use the 40% off coupon.
  • Terra Gazelle Terra Gazelle on Mar 10, 2015
Yes, exactly like ASCP. If the finish has a glossy finish i do use a deglosser...it helps clean and lift the teeth of the wood also to take hold of the Paint. I always use the Poly for anything that is going to be cleaned alot or is in a hot humid place. Though I was in a hurry once to get something moved and wanted to use it that day...I just used a couple coats of my DIY Chalk Paint and a couple coats of wax and its doing good. It is on a coffee station that gets wiped off a lot every day. Seems to be ok so far...its been 3 months.

Americana Decor sells a line of varnishes that go with their chalk paint. Michaels carries them. I have tried the soft-touch and the ultra-matte, and LOVE both. The soft touch has a buttery soft finish with minimal sheen. I've used it on a chest of drawers that I painted black (Americana chalky finish). It really came out professional looking and couldn't have been happier. The ultra matte dries very mat -- almost to the original chalky finish feel. I love to use it on pieces that I want to keep the chalky look, but give it some protection. I've used it on mostly small pieces like lamps, trays, etc. If someone is looking for an alternative to wax, I recommend trying these.

I'm no photographer and I just snapped it with my iPad...I was also a big chicken. Had the tall boy for 25 years hating the finish and especially the knobs. Finally worked up the courage. Two coats of Americana paint, light sanding with some distressing. Then I went back over the distressed parts with a watered down wash over the distressed parts so the distressing is subtle. Then 2 coats soft touch finish. Sort of a Pottery Barn look. Truly love working with the Americana chalk paint.

I've used this paint and love it compared to ANnie Sloan paint it works great. I'm not to impressed with the wax. So I'll stick to Annie Sloan wax. Hobby Lobby carries this same brand in smaller size of you need samples.
  • Lin Lin on Mar 03, 2017

I make my own with Plaster of Paris, use satin, matte finish or semigloss... PofP reduces the sheen, depending on how much you use. No formula, just mix in small batches until you get the consistency you want. I LOVE General Finish brand milk paint which is same concept as chalk paint but has a slight sheen to it and goes on very smooth. They also have more modern colors but this is a brand that is difficult to find in my area. It is readily available online. Costs slightly less than chalk paint, worth the price for special projects or to get exact color...Prussian blue is fabulous. I did 4 intricate dining chairs 2-1/2 coats with one pint for about $18. Good luck.

    • Lin Lin on Mar 03, 2017

Oops that should be Persion Blue, not prussion
