Giving An Old Bureau New Life

I'd been living with a mini city-sized bureau for FAR too long so when I saw this beauty on Craigslist for almost nothing, I pounced. I loved the clean lines, the size, and the classic look. But I didn't love the color or the beat of condition! A few coats of chalk paint, a couple of stripes and another Craigslist/ Annie Sloan pairing for the win!
Structurally, it was a winner (dovetailed joints, smooth gliding drawers, nice decorative details) but rest assured, this gal was beat up... veneer peeling off, chips, stains... it needed help.
This large sheet of veneer peeled right off easily. I used an iron over a wet towel to remove any remaining pieces.
I reached for the magical Annie Sloan chalk paint and gave the bureau two coats of Country Grey. Then, to punch it up and tie into the colors in our bedroom, I gave her two stripes of Provence.
I removed a few of the decorative wood details to make the bureau a little simpler, but reused the drawer handles since they suited the piece and were in great shape.
The stripes make the dresser feel fun and contemporary.
Loving the little hit of color the Provence blue adds to the room.
So much better!
