New Life for a Duncan Phyfe Style Drum Table

Drum tables happen to be one of my favorite pieces of furniture, so when my sister found this one at an antique shop and sent me the picture, I told her to grab it!
This one had fine details with the original hardware on the drawer and it's cute little metal "boots", which I knew could all be cleaned up nicely.
For the base and body of the drum, I sanded it all lightly and then did a black wash with General Finishes Ebony Dye.

For the details, I added antique gold gilding paste to its metal feet and the lion pull on the drawer. I also highlighted a few other detailed areas, which I hope you can see in the pictures.
For the top, I decided to do a stained rose.
I addded an ebony stain to the outside of the rose.
And then I added a cherry stain on top of the ebony and did some shading around the outside.
And this is where I ran into problems... I used a new-to-me top coat that did NOT work out for me! I'm sure it was user error, but I ended up with this streaky, wet look. I tried to remedy the situation a few different ways, but alas.... I had to sand it alllllllll back down and nearly start from scratch. I just didn't know if this was going to work out.

But after restaining the whole rose and sealing with a top coat that I frequently use - Polyvine - it all worked out! WHEW!

I had one that was my grandparent's, but I'm thinking mine had a leather inset top with some gold detail around the edge of the leather. You know with these rounded pieces you have "secret" storage-when you pull the drawer all the way out, stash your goodies in the sides and reinstall the drawer-Voila! Hidden stash!!! 💍💰💌
