I need curb apeal ideas for my home

I purchased a foreclosue and the home sits backwards on the lot. So the first thing you see when you pull into the driveway is the ugly addition on the back of the home. Any ideas on how to create some charm?

You have so many colors going on that I would first decide do you want tan house or a olive green house, my personal preference would be tan, it is more versatile so with that being said I would do a color match at a paint store and paint the olive green tan and then finish it off with matching shutters. Paint the foundation and lattice white and use a maintenance free railing around your deck in white and get rid of the existing wood railing. For a nice contrast I would paint that back wall (or what ever that box looking thing is) a dark brown, trimmed in white and plant some vines in it if there is a planter? Since this home is in Georgia, I would go to your local green house and see what they have for some colorful wild azalea bushes and or hydrangeas to line the driveway and also a tall hydrangea for the corner of the house where the addition and the home meet to cover the wood door, choose a neutral color for this and be sure that it is a fast growing specious like a miniature hydrangea tall bush/tree. Stamped concrete or asphalt would be an award winner for the driveway/walkway. Bright colored patio furniture with a nice umbrella would be a great addition with some palm trees to accent the corners of your deck. Good luck with the transformation and I hope it all goes well for you.

I agree with painting the house to make the color match. I would paint the woodwork around the deck area either the same color or a similar contrasting color. Keeping it bright will lift the whole look of the exterior. Some clever planting as mentioned in the above comment would bring it all together. I love hydrangeas, but see whats out there :)

  • Bron Bron on Dec 09, 2016

I thought a lovely lemon or cream climbing rose would look lovely along the lattice work. It would soften the lines of the deck area. Also maybe if possible to have a line of quick growing trees up the driveway to the left if possible. I agree that one color on the house would look better. All the best

  • Karen Dunnam Karen Dunnam on Dec 09, 2016

The above advice is good. Also, clean up the foundation -- that plywood panel should either be removed, or painted to be weatherproof and match the rest of the "base."

Paint all the faschias to match, swap out the shutters to be the correct height for the windows. Maybe add a set of stairs on the driveway side of the deck.

This has me wondering what the other side of the house looks like! Good luck with your new acquisition.

  • Too7015105 Too7015105 on Dec 09, 2016

I agree with having the house all one colour, but was drawn to the green with the contrasting white of the windows and thought how much sharper that looks compared to the tan. But I realize that you are stuck with tan siding so unless that can be replaced, it makes sense to change the addition to tan. However, in that case the brown shutters might look better if they were white, and I see that there is a window on the "front" of the house without shutters. All windows that have room for shutters could have them added. I guess the path to the main door leads off alongside the house from the driveway, and some attractive plants alongside might add curb appeal or small hanging baskets on that wall? Good luck, I hope you can change things in a way that pleases you!

I would also get rid of the shutter on that one window, it's too long for the window, also add a large window planter box underneath with flowers and trailing vines. Get rid of the plywood, use lattice. Paint uniform color on house and white on deck Railing and lattice. Use Large bushes around deck. :)

  • Bbunny42 Bbunny42 on Dec 09, 2016

All good suggestions except I would paint the foundation brown not white which would be very difficult to keep clean. I particularly like the climbing rose suggestion. Would love to see the "after" pictures.

  • Ann Smitt Ann Smitt on Dec 09, 2016

Cover the face of the home with stone to compliment the siding. Paint the foundation of the house to compliment the siding and stone. Extend the deck/porch all the way to the end of the house. Add a brick/stone walkway from the extended deck/porch to the drive. Landscape along the deck/porch and walkway, add outdoor ambient lighting. Build a deck/porch roof to make the home look finished and inviting. Win the lottery so you can pay for all these projects. Best wishes.

  • Ruby77 Ruby77 on Dec 09, 2016

I agree with above and especially like the idea of a stairway to break up the large span of foundation (paint that too) and remove or cover up that plywood or put a nice doorway on if you need to keep it for access. I would definitely put flower boxes under all windows as well as shutters all around but they need to fit the window. I may put window boxes on the railings as well. I personally don't care for wood railings in the front of a home as it weathers and makes me depressed in winter ;0) Foundation plantings that are evergreen for all around the deck. Plantings if possible around the side (unless its driveway you could use colorful planters to add charm). Its cute it just needs some TLC. Congrats and good luck with it!!

  • Renata Renata on Dec 10, 2016

First of all I would get rid of those shutters! Then match the siding and paint all the same color. Paint the foundation white and also the lattice and railing. I would add potted plants around the foundation. [I pot cuz I fear roots growing into foundation.] Plus you can make different level and heights of plant. Lights around the deck would also illuminate at night.

  • Lynne Forrestal Lynne Forrestal on Dec 10, 2016

The above suggestions are all good. If you took out a large wide area of the railing on the driveway side of the deck and made wide stairway leading up to connect the tall deck with the lower level of ground perhaps even with a slight curving towards the street if there is room, to add some curve to all the straight lines, and continue that with curves in the landscaping. be sure the landsapeing has height by the deck and layers down to ground level, bringing the eye down to connect the two. unify with color, foundation, possibly with a stone or brick facade to cover all the concrete. and sidings should go in ONE direction, not 3 different patterns, but color will help that to unify in the interem. Ican't see the other side of deck, so unknown . also, drive side, may need something to tie things together. if possible driveway paved in samestone or bricks as foundation.. Good luck , wahat a fun project. oh, and lighter color for deck would be my first thought. perhaps 2 tones though like top railing and deck one color and spindles another

  • Barb Dauber Barb Dauber on Dec 10, 2016

Definitely paint the house. I would put a rock facing on the foundation part. I would go with keeping the safety railing around the deck but paint it a complimentary color, maybe the same as the shutters. I might put a set of steps coming down alongside the driveway with a railing. . Is the plywood panel a door? It could be dressed up or replaced with a real door. Steps coming off the deck could hide it. There should have some plants around the back of the deck. Roses are pretty but thorny. Let us see a follow up when you are done

You have received a lot of great advice. After looking at your home several times, the white trim looks good with the green. Not sure about the tan. Possibly an off-white or cream color? And yes, those shutters have got to go. I put my hands over your picture only showing the green and white and it looked so much better. And the green blends well with the foundation. I cannot tell what color your roof is and that is important in picking out a color scheme. Rule of thumb, use only three colors. I suggest you do some research online to see what other folks are painting houses green and/or tan...then see what trim and accent colors they are using. I just did this and googled, "green houses" and then "tan houses." Was amazed at all the options! WOW!

  • Pam Pam on Dec 10, 2016

Hi. repainting is a no-brainier but to make this look like a "regular" front of a house I would remove the deck completely and install a porch. Add a bit of landscaping. If cost is a major issue demo the deck yourself possibly and recycle some of the wood for the porch. Unify with consistent paint and trim color and remove questionable shutter. Also, the fascias are "off". If they were redone in a more modern style the house would also look more updated. As time and budget allow you could increase landscaping and maybe level an area in front for a path/walkway with a post light. I hope you find what makes you happy because in the end YOU have to like what you do. Of course! Best wishes on happy curbs!

  • Lily Schlender Lily Schlender on Dec 11, 2016

is there only one shutter on the house? you should remove it and if cost allows remove deck, replace with a porch, nice wide steps facing the driveway and covered with a roof that extends from the original roofline. since the colors are mismatched you could just replace all the siding or paint the whole house a color you like. make it your home and enjoy.

  • Judith Watson Judith Watson on Dec 11, 2016

Painting concrete....well, eventually it will peel. I have seen concrete stain, as it penetrates the concrete and will not peel like paint will. It can be bought in different colors and the more you apply, the darker it can become, depending on the color. Use a color that compliments your home and deck. Perhaps stain the deck in the same or similar color. Yes, make a nice looking accent door for the access door to under the home...stain it to match the deck. You can put some nice looking hardware on it, like is used on a gate on a wooden fence. If you put shutters, I would try to make them and stain them the same color of the deck for a rustic look. Of course, landscaping with flowering bushes, trees, and flowers will also improve the look.

I feel for you.. There is a street very near to us where the homes face the main road but all entry to the homes is from the back so they have these fancy front doors and steps to nowhere. Not my cup of tea at all.

I would look into some new siding to blend that whole side together. Maybe some nice plantings etc to give a cohesive look to it.

  • PattyV PattyV on Dec 11, 2016

I am not sure by your brief description if you would want people having access to the back deck via some stairs. Having stairs attached to the deck will have people thinking this is the main entrance to your house. What room is connected to the deck? I agree with everyone else to remove the shutters facing the street. I would prime and paint the access panel to the crawl space the same color or stain as the foundation. I would paint the green portion of the addition the same color as the rest of the house so it doesn't look so broken up. Updating the facia along the roof line is a great idea as it would give an instant face lift to the overall appearance. Lastly, staining the railings, lattice and wood structure in the front of the deck all the same color will help it look less mishaped. Perhaps you might consider replacing the front shutters with some wooden ones in the same stain as the deck to tie both areas.

  • Dawn Dawn on Dec 11, 2016

Thank you all so much for all the great ideas.! The room from the deck is actually the master bedroom. Not ideal, but i am making it work. There is actually a large deck that overlooks a smaller deck and there are steps going to the other side of the backyard. There is access from the lower deck to the driveway. But you can't see it in the picture as there is a privacy fence that runs down the side of the driveway. I love the idea of painting the entire backside the same color. Regarding the facia board that is white on the backside of the house, how do you think that would look if I painted it the tan also? The white facia on the backside is not symmetrical and that drives me nuts . I love the idea of building some wooden shutters and staining them the same as the deck.

    • PattyV PattyV on Dec 13, 2016

I believe a simple fix to the roof line would be to mimic on the left side with what is on the right (on the "green" portion of the house or to the right of the light). Lord only knows what is hidden behind the facia on the left but if it looks similar to the existing "tan" portion of the siding, then it would be nice have the whole house painted in one color with the upper portion (existing tan color) in the front of the house painted a complimentary color. Stain all the wood a dark java or walnut stain and have the shutters match the stain to make it all unified.

  • Rachael Rachael on Dec 12, 2016

paint it a different colour for starters, maybe pale blue, lots of vines or potted tall plants at the back some smaller ones with blooms red or white

  • Karen Karen on Dec 12, 2016

DefinItaly paint then Add a few bushes and some flower boxes....it think that would add some nice elements

  • Cathy Cathy on Dec 12, 2016

You also have three colors of wood going on there. Painting all that white would more match the house, but staining a uniform color would also help. Try to draw that color if staining into the shutters which you should add.

  • Lynne Forrestal Lynne Forrestal on Dec 12, 2016

Based on the new details you shared, If you like the deck as is, then paint the entire back of house green and tan and facia area one color that goes with the deck, question are the white windows paintable? if so, I'd make them more of a cream/ with beige siding and then have shutters on all windows in a contrasting color depending on what YOU like, off red?, cream to match windows? dark teal green? .... I would do the faux stone on the foundation, and plant some tall thin evergreen bushes between drive an deck to cover some of the heavy wood ( unless that is acess point to storage under, in that case think about painting that lower part to match house... and let the deck be a deck and not a huge structure.

roof color does matter too. ,

    • April Monaco April Monaco on Dec 13, 2016

I agree with this comment, personally that deck is horrid, opening it up to a flat deck with maybe an overhead trellis with vines would be pretty and not look so much like an awful afterthought.

  • Kimberley Mouser Kimberley Mouser on Dec 12, 2016

I know you said that the master bedroom is connected to the deck, if money allows I would replase the sliding door and the bedrom? Windows with one large concertina door so that you can open up your bedroom onto the deck when weather permits. The privacy issue from the street could be helped with some lattice along the street side of the deck for best install I would extend the 2 end post of your deck (street side and opposite the bedroom door and window) upwards then place a 2 by 4 across from this you could hang lattice from it by heavy duty chain and connect the lattice at the bottom with chain as well (giving you a hanging privacy screen) this you can paint in the same or contrasting colours as the back of house which should be painted one main colour and a couple of accent colours for trim on house and deck end posts.

I would have stars on the driveway side of devk all along that side (remove the post and rails and the lattice) so the stairs run the entire lengh of the side of deck going right to ground level but stopping short of driveway, in between the driveway and stairs (newly built) I would put in a garden bed that runs along the street side of deck wraping around drivewzy corner of deck and stairs and ending short of side/back of house, in this gap you can then have a path from the bottom of the stairs to driveway. By doing this people will be more likely to drive up the driveway and past the deck to the side of the house that your driveway seems to lead too, hopefullyby doing this people will literally drive up the driveway and past the deck thereby leading them to the main entrance.

Too much going on, all of it looking like a back.

For a little money you can cover the foundation in a weatherproof faux stone. It comes in panels at fauxpanels.com. That will add a classier look.

Stain all of the wood to match the darker railing on the deck; on the lattice and on the rear wood structure. Paint that white fascia to match the building clapboard. Then stain or paint the rear wall of the bedroom a lighter brown or medium taupe color, all the way to the roof.

Add flowering shrubs around the entire base of the deck. Personally I would use hydrangea. You will get an easy care colorful curb appeal. Stick to groupings of same colors in masses for a bold look.

I would also add a wood arbor the width of the deck extending out about 10' and just above the doors and window. Planters on the deck at the sides of the arbor could hold climbing flowering vines like clematis for more color, and shade. It will add a strong architectural element for curb appeal.

Window boxes on the back deck railing on the outside face could hold more flowering or green trailing plants. It will help conceal the solid wood mass, as will the hydrangeas. Beyond that it is hard to tell without more photos.

  • Nitalu129 Nitalu129 on Dec 12, 2016

I consulted with sellers on curb appeal in Florida as part of my business. Curb appeal at minimal cost. There are a few things you can do at minimal cost to greatly improve the curb appeal. Don't Paint the driveway.......power wash it. Line the drive with some pretty man-made stones to give it a clean border. Paint the eaves and foundation one of the colors already used on the house. Use some small shrubs around foundation areas. Clean, sharp lines around foundation plantings with a dark brown mulch. In the summer put some large lots of annuals on the deck. Make sure your grass is properly fertilized and weed free. These things will do the most to improve the curb appeal.

  • Ginger the farm gal Ginger the farm gal on Dec 12, 2016

Paint the green siding tan, and add steps from deck, out under the window, and take the oversize shutters off. Add rock siding over concrete, clean up yard and add some evergreens.

  • Mary Mary on Dec 12, 2016

It looks like it needs help because there is no uniformity of color. Use the color on the shutters, perhaps for the entire deck, or go white with the deck and shutters too. Keep everything to two colors, and it will look 1000 time better. Dont forget the foundation which might look good with a facade of stone or just being painted out.

  • Nitalu129 Nitalu129 on Dec 12, 2016

I responded before. Trying to mask the add on will only make it less attractive. Paint the white eaves the green. Paint the foundation area the brown like the shutters. Print out a color print of this area and using color pencils try my suggestion. Foundation plants , a clean driveway and a beautiful lawn are the basics that will make this home shine. There is nothing unsightly about the sliding door or the railing around the deck.

    • Karen Dunnam Karen Dunnam on Dec 12, 2016

OP, you can upload your photo to one of the siding websites, select an area, and make it any color you might like to see. I did this with my first house, adding details like gables and windows.

Thought of another trick: whatever color you choose, make you main entry a strikingly contrasting color, to help visitors find your front door!

  • Nancy Parisi Nancy Parisi on Dec 13, 2016

Too many colors, too many materials used. simplify if you can, making some the same color. The green is ok, if you like it. Paint the foundation. Make the wood the same color all around. I would suggest consulting a decorator (we have one that works in the paint department. Benjamin Moore at Ace.) It looks as if you have concrete along the house where the access door is. Some landscaping along that area would help. The shutters need to be sized to the window above that area.

  • Pat11183342 Pat11183342 on Dec 13, 2016

First you need to unify the color.you want the siding the same color, I would go with the color of the horizontal siding.

Than everything below the horizontal siding needs to be the same color, I suggest the color of the shutters. If you don't want to paint the Latvia work and natural wood at end of deck you need to break it up visually with plants. If the ground area in front of lattis work is dirt , plant climbing flowers such as clamtis, sweet summer or sweet autumn clamitis's are fast growers, but warning, they are fast growers and down the road will require printing back. Both have a vanilla smelling flower. Flowering time and color vary by species. I quess there's a climbing hydrangea also. I'm not in your area, so I don't know what is best for your area. Avoid wisteria, it's highly invasive and will take over neighborhoods.

If that ground area in front of lattis work is a pad, faux wicker lawn furniture will look great.

For Infront of the wooden hedge Infront of deck, fill that space with flowering bushes, from the looks of the pic at least 3, but pay close notice to planting space manufacturer suggest, you can always use annuals to fill between until perennials mature.

I also suggest a lower perennials Infront of bushes , but may not be nessarry depending on bush used and how full it stays at ground height.

I strongly recommend you do a lot of research on the perennials you add long before you plant them. Nothing worse than having to keep buying to figure out what will grow where and it sticks to pull out a dead bush. Don't rush the plantings, take a couple of years to figure out when the sun and shade is and where, your plants will be more successful if you do this.

Also if you opt to add landscape rocks, the guy who sells you the rock is a gold mine of knowledge usually, (not big box store but landscaping business) they will generally give great advice on plants, locations and application, even if they are not getting work from you. Your still buying product. Their business relies on happy customers and work of mouth.

  • MARY MARY on Dec 14, 2016

If you can change the roof line it would go a long way to improving the overall look. The suggestions below are if you can't afford to fix the roof line.

There are just too many patterns going on. You have horizontal siding, two types of vertical side, balusters on the deck rail and the lattice. I would remove all the vertical siding. The siding used as fascia I'd replace with an aluminum wrap and I'd replace the vertical siding with matching horizontal siding or a smooth stucco so you don't add any more lines. I would also remove the white piece that runs down the middle dividing the house. Whatever color you choose to paint the house I'd also paint the foundation to make the house look taller. I like the stone foundation idea but it might make it too country and busy adding more lines. I wouldn't add stairs to the deck if bedrooms can be accessed from the deck because of safety issues. I'd remove the lattice put weed control fabric underneath with stones on top and then plants some nice arborvitae for privacy and color. The shutters are too big for the window so I'd remove them. Why is there plywood on the foundation? Also not sure what the paneling wood is in front of the deck but it's also adding vertical lines. You can power wash the deck and stain or paint it a coordinating color but not the same color as the house.

I'd love to see what it looks like when you fix it up.

Is it a trailer with an addition?

Have fun working on your house

  • Teresa Teresa on Dec 15, 2016

I will offer a few inexpensive ideas. Even vinyl siding can be painted. Paint the whole place one colour and add steal colour that will tie the lace together. Plant a garden on the driveway size of your deck that includes evergreens that will be as tall as the top of the railing. Paint the wooden part of the foundation wall to match the foundation colour. As part of my greenhouse/garden centre/landscaping business, I can supply a "paper" design for you if you want,

  • Susan Susan on Dec 19, 2016

replace vertical siding with horizontal to match existing siding. reuse deck boards and railings to make a lower deck by installing two full length steps down to the new deck. this will make the deck less imposing and you can also sit on the steps when you have large groups over. painting the siding - all of it - the same colour will help with unification and this should be a personal choice but be sure all the siding is the same colour. replace the skirting with the same size, small, all around including remove the heavy vertical wood on the back or should i say front of the deck. open up the deck by adding access stairs at the front/back that are at least 5 feet wide to give an elegant access point. stain the deck, railing and stairs the same colour but paint the top handrails in black to give relief from too much of the same colour. plant all around the back/front of the house and the deck and stairs with some large showy plants like hydrangia which require little care and return each year. they also have a lot of greenery throughout the spring summer and fall. you should now have a less imposing front deck that compliments your all-in-one construction material. good luck!

  • Don Don on Dec 27, 2016

I agree with the others...too many different colors, directions and lack of landscaping.

I liked Gen johnson's suggestions and would only add if rock (which was my first thought too) on the cement lower walls was too expensive for you...continue the porch lattice around the rest of the house to tie together. You could either use cement nails, screws or some heavy construction glue (Liquid Nails etc.)

Basically tie the different areas/colors back together. Either remove the one set of shutters or, put them on all windows. Remove vertical boards and paint area same color as horizontal siding.

Make a small plant area close to the street on both sides of the driveway and then, as suggested, outline the driveway (at least on the left side) by some type of border. Even a line of small white painted (or not) rocks....

Take a few more photos and print them in black and white so, you can try some color combinations. Good luck.

This is my second comment. How does the inside work for you? Is there a way to refigure the inside to "flip" the master bedroom with the living room or den area?? That way the "back deck" would be your primary entrance and all the comments and ideas would make sense. Your home's first impression is primary entrance and not a back deck.

  • Chris Chris on Dec 29, 2016

Change railing to bronze aluminum and glass panels. An easy DIY if you are handy. Paint exterior a colour suitable for you and your neighbourhood, but not too dark or it will absorb heat from the sun and warp if it is too much darker than the original. Add a frame around the windows to beef them up. They could be bronze or trim colour. Remove shutters if you use frames. Paint the large wooden box in front, the lattice and basement covering bronze to ground the deck and house. Plant trailing plants in box. Put really large house numbers on the driveway side of the box.
