How to Paint a Deer for Your Holiday Home

Here is a fun Deer Painting you can make for your holiday décor. It was pretty fun to paint and I’ll show you how. I am loving deer this year and if you can’t tell already I’m adding some fun deer into our holiday décor. My holiday décor is usually a lot of red and white and candy canes and peppermints and bright fun yummy things like that so I wanted a bright red Deer. The inspiration came from a magazine and I drew him free hand on paper first. I don’t know if I am the most artistic person but drawing and painting reminded me of when we were little. My brother was the awesome drawer and sketcher and we always thought he would be an artist. I was more of the girl that colored well and I will say that in the 5th and 6th grade I made all our nametags for our desks out of index cards. They were the big bubble letters and some kids wanted flames around them. Anyway, no big art career for me but I thought I’d give my holiday deer a try. See the Deer Ornament in the magazine above? I thought he was an adorable model for my deer drawing.
Here’s what you’ll need:
1. Canvas board – I found this one for $1.95 at a thrift store
2. Red Paint (or whatever color your heart desires)
3. A couple paint brushes so you can outline with the smaller and fill in with the larger
Total cost for me = $1.95 (I had the paint and brushes already)
Here’s how to make it: Draw your deer onto paper. I used wrapping paper and then cut it out and traced around it. If you don’t feel comfortable drawing it you can also print out a deer and blow it up on your computer and then trace. Then using a small brush I outlined all the pencil mark edges. Once it was outlined I then used a larger brush and filled it in. I applied two coats of paint so the color was nice and bright!!
And that my friends is how I painted a Red Deer! I LOVE him. It’s no Picasso but it will be perfect in our home. I will be putting up lots more Christmas décor real soon so we’ll see where he lands once everything is up. If you’d like more Deer inspiration you can see how to make Deer Antlers and Deer Christmas Garland on the blog. Come on over.
Have a great day and thanks so much for stopping by, Lisa
