How many of you have problems with muddy backyards?

I would like to see if there are any specific regions of the United States that experience an issue with muddy backyards.

I live near Sacramento, CA and I have a miserable back yard! Clay soil that needs to be amended desperately, but I'm disabled and can't do it myself and I haven't had the money to hire someone to do it. When it rains the water soaks in, then puddles up on top and goes nowhere because the builder didn't grade it properly. The dogs love it! :) I have many plantings in pots, was able to find plants that don't mind having soggy feet (or if they do mind, I've been lucky and they haven't died). But the best thing to do if you have soil that stays muddy is to dig down need, amend it well and make sure you have a good drainage system in place. And don't over-water during the dry months! Good luck! BTW, I've posted a bunch of photos of all sorts of things I've grown in pots.

@Mary Tonningsen I am on the Board of Directors for my local Habitat For Humanity. We not only build houses (# 12 is finished!) we also have a program called " A Brush of Kindness". We do alot of volunteer work for the elderly and disabled folks in our community. Painting, yard work, minor construction, winterizations, the list goes on. Please contact your local Habitat office or senior and disabled office. Many youth groups such as the Boy Scouts and churches have programs to assist folks with situations such as yours.

If you give it a path to leave it will follow that path. Just gotta give it a place to go.

Oh goodness! This is one reason that one of our University football teams are known as The Ducks! I live in the Willamette Valley in Oregon. We get alot of rain, and alot of mud!

I happen to live on a hill in Atlanta and my backyard is a jungle! Really, it is! My porch and deck are off the ground so it looks like I live in a tree house...stunning this time of year! It was the thing in the 60s/70s when this neighborhood was built to leave all the trees. No one bothered to clear out the back yards so we have never done it either. Just did not need any more to fool with. I would suggest you plant a couple of trees and make some pine islands as we call them in this area. Instead of bagging up your leaves and/or burning them, pour them over in the pine isles...the dogs love them! You can add a few plants and a pot or two of flowers and make it most attractive! Even put in a walkway, patio or sitting area! I tried to include a photo but the battery is down in my camera!

Oh, thank you, Patricia! I just may check in to that although I feel a bit uncomfortable with it. There are so many people in worse shape, both physically and financially, than I am. Despite being unable to do it myself, I'm sure that there are needier people. After all, I'm not in a wheelchair, my arms work, I can pay my mortgage, and buy food and pay my bills. Just can't do the extras. Do you really think it would be OK for me to ask for help from them?

Is this the start of a sales pitch? I thought this forum was more down home than that.

Not sure to which response you are refering to as a sales pitch @Columbine Landscaping ? Maybe it has already been deleted and I can't see it, but the ones that I do see don't seem to be very sales pitch oriented. If you have a concern I think you can click a flag button and let somone in admin know about it. @Miriam I @Yair Spolter
