Should I repaint this piece white?

Question

I spent alot of time on this little antique cabinet/table including repairing and doing a finish with a glaze over it. I made the knobs from clay and painted them to match. Unfortunately, this piece has not sold so I'm thinking of repainting it. Do you think white would be a good colour or should I try for a light grey and change the knobs to glass? I'm attaching a pic of one of my handmade knobs I'm thinking of using.

I love the glass knobs! Gorgeous. Try reprinting it with Annie Sloan linen paint. Just one coat and then soft wax it. Also I'd paint the all if the inside drawer.

It really is lovely, so I can't imagine why it wouldn't sell. The glass knobs are lovely, too! I'm guessing cream or white would be good, with either of the knobs would make wonderful accents. :)

Love this as a side table by my bed. The drawer I would put a pad & pen , also my cell phone. The door could my lotion plus a couple of light weight books.

I would change the knobs to glass.....the blue is gorgeous. Also, oftentimes, what we place on top of a table can make all the difference in the world (lace, pretty vase, old books,); and you may find the blue and current knobs are perfect.

I think if you would paint the door using an interesting stencil in a color a couple shades lighter. That would add interest to the door. Color is great!

if you are trying to sell the piece,then soft grey or cream would appeal to more people. your knobs are beautiful also...I would not change those. distress the edges of the cabinet a bit more might also help.

Yes...white would be better. I would keep the hardware the way it is. This blue was popular in the late 80's, early 90's. The white would make your hardware and decor pop. Right now, it all blends.

depends on what the rest of your decor looks like. You usually want a blend of colors. The blue looks nice and the picture on the wall matches well. However if you dont like it blue and want more white use some ocra by Annie sloan just to soften it some for a more shabby sheik look.

If you are selling it, blue is a color that not everyone would want because of their decor colors. White - creamy offwhite kind of goes with everything. Love the knobs! either should work because the knobs are interchangeable. Maybe you could give them a choice of knobs.

Maybe you could overlay white with the same antiquing technique you used letting just a little of the turquoise show on the edges. I love your knobs but the glass ones would add some bling.

While I like the blue, I agree that it may limit your buyers. Have you thought of painting it a flat black, distressing the edges and using the crystal knobs? Black can really ground a room and make a nice statement.

if you are planning to sell it, why not try to sell it as is first . .if it has no takers then change it . .my philosophy has always been let the new owner make the choice that is best for them

I have a cabinet just like yours. I had sanded mine and stained it a dark espresso brown. Took the door off and add a seagrass basket. Then changed the knob on the drawer for a stainless/silver one. I think your cabinet would look good white or dark brown like mine. Can't wait to see what you did with it.

try and glazed 'dirty' color over it and wipe off..see what that looks like....it'll tone it down

Although the blue is beautiful, it does limit your 'audience' of prospective buyers. Black or white, distressed slightly, would be your best option. If you get too specific with design/add-ons, you're back to limiting your audience although some of the ideas I've seen here are wonderful--but added work and expense and you're back to limiting your buyers--again! Unless you're wanting to group it with something else that you're selling and make it a set, keep it simple. Let the buyer's imagination take over......mine has!

I know you have already sold the cabinet, but for future reference I would simply add some pretty paper inside the drawer and cabinet, or a contrasting flash of colour inside. I have seen some really cute pieces with wallpaper along the edges of the drawer. Just a thought. And I love your homemade knobs.

Another thing you could have considered was a one-color stencil on the front of the drawers.
