What are you going to do? A simple paint job or actually replacing the toilet, sink, cabinet, tub, etc.? It makes a huge difference what you intend to do and what your budget is. Post a photo too.

First you need a plan! Take photos, draw up a plan, take good measurements. Shop and purchase the fixtures and materials. Start the demo. Replace the tub. Install the flooring and tile (if in your plan). Install new vanity and sink. Install new toilet. Then install accessories and finishing touches.

We have done many bathroom and kitchen renovations, in our homes, we have moved a lot!!!! First question, is it the only bathroom in the house, if so you need to figure out where you are going to be showering etc. whilst yours is out of commission. If you think a project will take 5 days, it will probably take 10. Plan and measure everything, twice, gather all the tools and equipment you require ahead of time. You can rent tile cutters and it's well worth it, will make the job so much easier. Tiling takes a little practice, the last thing you want are lines that are not straight, use a plumb line to chalk your first straight line and start away from the corners, the corners are never straight. Buy some extra tiles to compensate for the ones you may break in the cutting and tile nipping process. If you can possibly get help it's always good to have an extra pair of hands, particularly if your installing glass shower walls and manoeuvring a bath tub. Pedestal sinks look nice but unless you have a lot of other storage in the room, opt for an in cabinet sink, also those vessel glass sinks are beautiful but if kids are using the bathroom you will be trying to keep it clean and free of soap scum a lot!!! Also those great looking faucets where the water trickles out, same thing, kids love to let the water trickle out through their hands onto the floor. Finally, learn from this experience if you make a mistake you can cover it or fix it, probably only you will notice it anyway, unless it's a glaring thing. Finally , when you have put the wax ring down and placed the toilet on it, sit on the toilet, get the heaviest person around to do this, it's called seating the fixture, then you can bolt the toilet down and be sure you have a good seal. The last thing you need after all that work is the toilet leaking. Enjoy the new experience, you will be proud of how it looks.

    Thank you

  • Yup, gut job. I just did a major reno on a 1926 bathroom. Kept the cast iron tub and sink, but everything else went. My "down time" was waiting for the building inspectors to make sure the work was up to current code. If you plan on moving / changing electrical or plumbing and do not have experience, call in the pros.

First statement from William Burbank, from IL is critical.

    "...First you need a plan!..."

    (do not skip this step)
