Christmas sweater pillows, how to sew?

Im not the worlds best sewer. I have a nice sewing machine, and I want to make some sweater pillows from the knit type used sweaters. Do I use a regular machine needle and thread? Does the knit from the sweater material get caught on the machine where the needle goes down? Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Patricia. Christmas sweater pillows sound like a fun project. I've never attempted this, but have cut into bulky sweaters to repurpose them other ways. When I cut into a sweater it immediately starts to unravel and curl. A sweater is also very stretchy. I think I'd put a walking foot on the sewing machine and use a Jeans/Denim needle and a coordinating color of polyester thread. If you don't have a walking foot for your sewing machine use a zigzag stitch. I'd also cut a square from a sleeve and practice on that before starting the pillow project. Good luck and I hope you share your finished project. :)

I would also try using a walking foot. You should increase your stitch length as well. It may help to add a row of tape over the stitch line, as this will prevent the sweater from getting caught while you are stitching. That will also help stop some of the 'curling'.
