Need ideas for our deck renovation

We moved into a house where the previous owner never maintained the wood deck. There are places where some the wood needs to be replaced but we cannot afford to re-do the whole deck (400 sf) . It is on the second floor with a railing and outside stairs , which also need refurbishing. we want to do most of the work ourselves because we are both retired on small fixed incomes . we already have tools but need ideas on doing this project ,preferably in sections. we're open to any ideas .

If you are looking for discounted wood I would recommend reaching out to Habitat for humanity programs which offer discounts on closeouts of many items.Secondly decide which needs to be replaced immediately for safety reasons.Then take one step at a time.PRIORITY FIRST>>>>
I love Janet's answer. With some good pictures we can probably help you identify what's the most important parts to replace. Take pictures from as many angles as possible especially underneath and put them here.
a lot of older men have nothing to do,after you get your wood I would bet you could get one or 2 to come and help for free or very cheap .! sherry fr. Canada
Hi Just remember after replaceing your wood planks .Always oil your Decks will give them a nice finish.Also will prolong the life of the wood (protect)
I would suggest every 12 months a good oiling.
