Improvised Headboard

A few years ago, I had a spare piece of plywood from another project and decided to build a headboard for my bed.
No in progress pics so I made some drawings illustrating the process.

The plywood was already just the right size for the width of the bed. Full size mattress is 54" wide, wood was 52" wide x 48" high. Bought some 1 x 4 boards and built posts and a top ledge. The holes at the bottom are to bolt the whole thing to the bed frame.
I then added side walls with a couple of pieces of pre-cut 24 x 48 plywood, extended by a foot at the bottom with a piece of pre-cut 24 x 24 cut in half.
Side tables are from IKEA (don't think they make these particular ones anymore) and are hung on the side walls with keyhole hangers and screws.
Painted in flat black for the plywood surfaces and semi-gloss black for the posts.
Closeup of the post tops.
Once it was all together, I added a ridge of 1 x 4 around the rear perimeter parallel to the sides and top to create a trench for a rope light.
And finally, I built bed risers out of threaded metal gas pipes and screw on fittings.
Suggested materials:
  • Plywood, 3/4"   (Lowe's)
  • 1 x 4 boards, 4 to 6 ft length   (Lowe's)
  • Side tables   (IKEA)

Thanks. I made the drawings during the build to figure out basic dimensions and test ideas before buying material.
