About Me:

I am a retired Duke Energy employee who worked for 41 years on heavy equipment. My hobbies include riding my Harley and working with wood. My brother and I have a small wood shop and we build just about anything you can think of. We have both made most of the funiture in our homes and lots of items for the church as well as other people. One of my loves is doing mission work. I have made eight trips to Honduras and one to Costa Rica and hope to do many more. There is no better feeling than to go help spread the Good News.

Cabinets: Do you have upper cabinets in your kitchen?

I need space in my kitchen and was inspired by beautiful kitchens with those upper cabinets. http://www.thebungalowblog.com/2012/06/tr... ...»

Most of them I've seen have glass in the doors. I decided to attempt to make some myself and here's the progress so far. I need to sand and fill in with tons of wood putty but I think they'll be ok. Now I have to figure out the doors. Can anyone tell me how to make the doors? Any hints are appreciated! I'm looking for a creamy white paint color too....any recommendations?

So many good suggestions but one thing that I have not seen asked is. Are these made of real ...»
wood or are they press board or MDF? If they are real wood then scrub them with any good cleaner and lightly sand the finish smooth and apply the Kilz primer and repaint to your desired color. But if they are press board or MDF be careful of wetting them too much. These types of material will absorbed the water and swell. The best way to redo these types of cabinets is to sand the finish off and then seal them with a good sealer and paint them. Most cabinets sold in Lowes and Home Depot is press board with a finish applied. Some of them have wood doors but the cabinets are press board. They hold up well until the finish is compromised and moisture gets into the board. MDF is a little more forgiving but still has the same problem. Just check to see if they are real wood before you soak them with water.

prevent them from bleeding through the new color the pictures show pink and yellow color which could come through a lighter color this is why I suggested the Kilz primer.
