Hi Jo, foil works well. You can also run the edges along a glass bottle.

how old are the scissors? Are they pretty old then they might get a really excellent sharpen by a local sharpener....They don't charge much and can make those thing ZING. If they are newer then using the foil method will work for awhile but many of the less expensive ones are kind of throwaway scissors not made to withstand heavy sharpening

A simple trick that I use all the time....cut some sandpaper with your scissors. This will sharpen them up and you will be glad to use them
