Our fireplace had great bones but we had dreams of it being the grand focal point of our family room, so we painted all the woodwork white, painted all the brass black, and built a faux chimney surround, so the fireplace would extend to the ceiling. Oh, and did I mention we did all this for $60. Stop by and see how we accomplished it all.

The makeover really has made a huge difference. I think whitewashing it softening the brick might be nice too, if you decide to lighten it up.
