I wear thick headbands practically every single day, and I put a piece of velvet underneath. I actually have a separate velvet headband that I tie with velcro, and then I put my headband on top of that. If you want to attach it to a specific headband, I would sew a piece of velvet on the inside. It really prevents it from slipping all the time.
You can use a wiggrip (a velcro headband, like the one Sarit mentioned) underneath the headband, it will keep the band in place and is very comfortable. http://www.mcwigs.com/wigrip.html
I think that velvet would make a good solution. If you get a piece of velvet and determine which direction, when rubbed, is the slippery direction, and which is the friction direction - you cut a little strip and hot glue it on to the headband in the friction direction and that should keep it pretty well attached to your head :-)
