I need a review on LIQUID NAILS!

I have a brick fireplace wall at the end of my den...dark, ugly! I want to put up wood like judges paneling to the sides but am leery of shooting or drilling into the brick (I can just see it coming down!) Is liquid nails dependable for such an application?

Jeanette, I've been wood working for more than 40 years, yep 40. One thing that I have learned is that you can NOT count on liquid nails. Do yourself a favor and use masonry screws. Even if later you decide you want to change it out, the little holes can be filled and you won't even know they were there.

Thanks. I was just worried about hurting the integrity of the bricks.

Not LN, but PL Premium is what I'd use, but you still need something to physically attach it in a few places, to act as a clamp. Any adhesive works best when combined with clamping force until set.
  • Do not use screws or nails into the brick. Take your time and measure the cement between them and drill into that. This way you can remove them at a later date fix the cement and the bricks remain intact. However, you need to be sure that your not putting the wood to close to the fire. There are codes and distances that are require care in that regard. Also if there is a space between the brick and the wall, do not close this up. Air must flow freely between the brick and the framing of the house. And dependent upon when the fireplace was installed meaning later then the house was built. It is common to find brick installed with an air gap then the fireplaces that are solid brick and cement. the primary reason is heat moves through the brick fast. And any brick wood contact can become a issue for fire safety. Good luck on your project!

Thanks, we will make sure we observe the workers if and when we can get this done. Also, We do not plan to put anything near the actual opening and will actually have a surround built out from it and will probably paint the brick next to the opening with the proper fire safe paint. Believe me, this is a job that will go undone before the "cheapest bid" does it!
