We are having a hard time watching tv. We can watch the news and talk shows! Some or most movies and nature shows have so much background noise and music we can't hear what they are saying! Is there a way to fix it! Thanks!

@Cathy W We bought a sound bar and it works good! Back to watching movies again! Maybe it would help you too!

I would be getting my hearing checked. I am not saying this to be rude so please don't take it the wrong way. As we get older we can lose some of our range of hearing at certain pitches and this can cause it to be difficult for instance if we are trying to listen to a conversation at a dinner party where there is competing noise, the scenario you are describing where the music or background noise is so intrusive you cannot make out the words being spoken. I have suffered the same problem since my late thirties, so when I say, as we get older, I don't necessarily mean in our 60's or 70's where you might expect some decrease in your hearing. Whether there is anything you can do to the tv, apart from use the subtitles facility on the tv to assist you in following the plot of any movies etc I don't know. My father used to use the subtitles as his hearing got worse as he got older and he found it difficult to follow the punch line of any jokes, the plot in movies and so on without the titles even though he could hear normal conversation and was not deaf as such.

I have turned programs that I love off because of the background music. Wish I knew the answer.

@Edwina J Try turning the subtitles option on so you can follow the movie's dialogue. It can be off putting till you get used to it, but you can then turn the volume down and stop the annoying music. At least that way you can watch what you want on TV and not miss out.

Get yourself some TV Ears....a wireless head set system that give you the ultimate in stereo surround sound and you can hear every word. TV Ears is one brand,,,,,,the is also Sony and a few other companies. Don't look for a bargain price set...it's just a waste of $$$$$$ I have a unit made by Sennheiser (about $90.00 on Amazon....2 head sets and a receiver/transmitter) and watching anything is sensational. This is becoming a problem I hear from many young people too! I can hear the news and talk shows just fine, But I like a movie now and then and the music drowns out the voices! That is where I need the help, to make the voices louder than the background sounds!

CBS is one of the bad ones, CSI and Criminal Minds come to mind. And Hawaii 5-O too. They must think the Over-Sized sounds of crashing cars, explosions are more important than dialogue.

I would love to have a solution for this, too. I watch movies and shows with the remote right next to my hand so I can quickly turn down the sound when music starts. It's pretty ridiculous to constantly have to turn the volume up and down.

@AvonelleRed I do the same thing. Some times it is so often that I give up and change the channel. We have a Bose system that is great. Even this can't make the volume right

When I'm really interested in a TV program that has overwhelming "background" music, I mute the TV & put on closed caption. This isn't ideal, but it is less annoying.

I find it helps to switch the sound from stereo to mono

If you have an HD flat screen tv, there may be an adjustment for it in your audio settings.
