I had oak cabinets in my kitchen, with an unusual insert in the centre that looked like burlap. I thought I could strip the cabinets and refinish but the centre panel was not cooperating! Hard as nails finish. So I compromised.
I stripped the finish off the oak and sanded and then did a pickling white wash before sealing. The centre panels I painted with cabinet paint. Not as hard as melamine paint, but that is no longer available where I live.
New hardware finished the probject.
