I need help making over my first grader's desks please!

My first grader's desks are very old and the tops won't come clean. Is there something I can put on the tops to make them look better. Would contact paper work or would it be a distraction (picking at edges)?

Contact paper will work providing you apply it so the creases are underneath, Other ideas as well you could decopauge them with assorted learning activities or make designs with colorful duct tape again making sure it is applied so they cannot peal it off,or paint them with chalk board paint.

Little kiddos love to peel, so the chalkboard paint is a better idea. They will love to sponge them off with water to clean up too.

Have you tried cleaning with a Mr clean magic eraser? That works really well on many things.

Yes, unfortunately that didn't work either.

Thank you for your ideas. I like the chalkboard idea. Would I have to prime the surface first?

I have eliminated the 'primer stage' by cleaning the wood piece by GENEROUSLY spraying it with Awesome (bought at the $ store) and rubbing vigorously with a cotton rag. I think you could use a minwax product (again, on a rag) OR and I do love the idea of the chalk board finish.......that the kids can make notes on. Buy a couple of bottles of awesome and a box of cotton rags for the class to use to clean their own desks regularly! If any kids are allergic, it can be done after class.... I have has terrific results on some pretty amazing pieces with this..... Karen

How about doing a go fund me page for new desks or work stations.

  • Kj Kj on Jan 10, 2017

gofundme is an online fund sourcing page where people can set up requests for funding for anything from funeral expenses to school supplies. Teachers I know have refurnished their entire rooms this year. Last year several teachers I know finished the year with 10 iPads each thanks to generous people who wanted to donate to their projects. I have never done one, but it is the go to for many teachers who are trying to upgrade their classrooms, fund technology, or just get furniture that suits their students' needs.

    good luck!

if it is white.....could primer it then paint with chalk paint...if you paint it a darker colr it does not need primer...either way i would sand it down on top a nd sides to make it imperfect..may need 2 coats of paint if markers coming through..could polyurethane top if it is wood ...after sanding on it ...and using "orange gel stripper on top to get all of markings out...i just use sponge type sanding block...cheap ..depends on if good furniture ...or cheap?
