How to put accent tile over this sink

redoing bath, would like to put some accent tile on the wall above this sink photos attached....
Forgive the messy sink, under renovation....I am going to paint horizontal stripes in the bath....after the Electrican gets the fan replaced and I get on the second coat of paint. Just want to jazz it up a bit and keep water from going down the wall behind the sink.

As you can see the sink is curved....
Not a whole lot of space between sink and wall BUT enough for water to get back there? View from top

Get a tube of Tile & Tub Caulking, go around sink with it leaving a good bead showing , then with wet rags and your finger..With your finger press it into caulk and slowly move it around ( stopping at times to wipe your finger off ) I use paper towels to wipe off any smears off the wall ..You can use mastic and put tiles in place right on the wall ..I suggest you use a 3/16 v-notch trowel to stick your tiles up ;;Make sure it is spread evenly , so when you press your tile in , the mastic doesn't come up between the cracks ..Always keep clean water & sponge to help clean as you go ..After the tiles have set 24 hours grout it in ... Good Luck ...

Susan, from the photos this looks to be a small freestanding sink that doesn't have a cabinet and if that's the case you might think about this area (the backsplash) being the placement of those horizontal stripes and the tile could run the distance, maybe??

I like @Terry's Flooring suggestion of caulking. But I think it might be unusual to see tile in this setting (though an experienced setter could easily butt down to the sink). you may consider an alternative to (ceramic) tile, tin or the like - lower profile and easier to work with. As long as you are doing custom painting. perhaps paint on a splash ... in a bath you should be using a Sateen or higher sheen anyway and these resist moisture on their own as it is. If the bath isn't getting two tons of regular traffic - I'd paint and caulk and be done. good luck.

Have you considered metal back splashes? Just Google. You can buy online or at a DYI store. They come in different colors, textures and finishes to give you whatever effect you wish. Good luck.

oh I just spent time checking the faux metal PVC back splashes! They are actually PVC. No sharp edges! Glue up...easy to cut....have to visit Home Depot to see them in real life vs net photos. But looks like it will work and still I can caulk around sink back, having something for the caulk to grip. This is amazing....thank you!

First use a thin bead of caulk. Then if you want to tile I suggest you use mosiac tiles which can easily be separated into the dimensions you want for height around the sink. The smaller tiles will work on a curved surface.

We would remove the sink, tile and replace. Just make sure you adjust the mounting bracket to extend out far enough from the wall to rehang.

@Joyce Keplinger makes a great suggestion. Removing the sink would produce such a better job (though mounting the sink to tile ups the difficulty of the job) and Terry gives good tips for installing wall tile. I might think about doing the whole wall but done right you could give yourself a nice little feature behind the sink. cheers.

I think @Liliana Wells suggestion of the faux metal back splash tiles is the best solution. It's easy to trim tight against your sink and then after the install follow the instructions from @Terry's Flooring to caulk completely around the sink. The caulk described is how the builder did the pedestal sink in our powder room.
